Mayor Carty Finkbeiner says he stands by the citations handed out last week by the Division of Streets, Bridges and Harbor. He says the tickets were issued under a city law against parking on unpaved surfaces, including gravel driveways.

During a news conference Monday, Finkbeiner ignored a reporter's question of whether the crackdown and fines were related to the city's budget crisis.

and in Syracuse, we thought it was bad when you could not park on grass in your own yard.

At least here, in Mobile County (I don't know about the rest of Alabama), a police officer cannot issue a citation on private property. The exception to this is if a person is parked in a handicapped spot or in a fire lane.

A few years back, I was at the grocery store, & was putting stuff into my passenger side. My car rocked & the roof bumped me in the back of my head when I had my head inside the car. I looked up on my driver's side & noticed a big Mercury Grand Marquis backed into my door. The guy started to leave, but after I yelled he stopped. When I called the police, he made us switch information. A law was just passed for everyone to have car insurance & the other driver had none. However, because the incident took place on private property, the officer could not issue him a citation for having no insurance.

Even though I was kind of angry about that (because I just had my car repainted), if it did get to that point where citizens could be cited on theri own property, citizens would have no protection for how they park their vehicles even if it is on their own property.

So what's next? Get arrested for trespassing in your own house because the bank holds the mortgage.

Looks like the mayor has fired himself (so to speak) - he's up for a recall vote in November according to the article.

More and more idiocy appearing in the news more frequently it seems, and people don't seem to mind advertising themselves as the idoits.

Like I have said earlier... maybe we could eject Ohio and Florida from the USA. While we are at it, maybe Oklahoma and Texas too! :tonofbricks:

Neither my driveway or my road are paved. If someone came to my house and gave me a ticket for parking in my own unpaved driveway, he'd be eating that ticket.

The great nation of Texahoma would thank you. We want no part, however, of the hanging chads of Florida (of which I was once a resident) or the yankees of Ohio.

My homeschooled children and I just built an 18' trebuchet as part of their math, science, and history classes.

Maybe we could use it to fling libs into the Bay?

Would I need a passport to go see the Astros play? Maybe that idea won't work.

I have heard some crazy names for combined state areas such as Ark-La-Miss, Ark-La-Tex, or even Flori-Bama. Sometimes we refer to people that live in the extreme edges of Mobile County as East Mississippians becuase they live so close to the border & tend to drive like some Mississippians.

My driveway is 1/4 mile long through 25 acres of hard woods. I don't think I can get a ticket even if I park sideways. Love country living.

    Cheers,

    Jim

No doubt the tickets are written under a land use or zoning code and not under the traffic code.
