Huckabee commuted sentence of man tied to police slayings

The suspect in the slaying of four police officers was released from an Arkansas prison nine years ago after a controversial decision by then-Gov. Mike Huckabee to commute his sentence.

I knew Huckabee was a schmuck~I just couldn't put my finger on it, now there's 9 children missing a parent...

Since this suspect is now a corpse there probably won't be much talk about this incident~~won't be the long diatribes by the whiny media since it was a black-on-white killing. Guaran-*-tee ya if a white dude smoked 4 black cops it would be national outrage, but then that's the times we live in...white cops are disposable.

Huckabee is not a schmuck and you should look into the details of the reasons for giving clemency before making such absurd statements. Add to that Huckabee has already expressed regret and in the end he is not to blame for any of this.

I agree. This guy got a 95 year sentence at 17 years old. For his crimes in the past instance, that was WAY too much. Huckabee is not to blame at all.

Regardless of how you might feel, that is not appropriate language to use here.

Sayin' he's sorry doesn't exonerate Huckabee, and the original sentence was justified...dead cops prove it.

What ridiculous, racist comments. Why bring race into this?

As for Huck, how many of you defending him were outraged at Governor Dukakis over Willie Horton? Be honest now.

Willie had actually killed someone before he went to jail the first time. But I know there are inevitable comparisons to the two. The guy has numerous bad evals, and a 106 year sentence, and Huckabee should be held responsible for his part. I don't mean to belittle the deaths of these officers, but I hope this ends any presidential aspirations of this psuedo-conservative.

In any case, I am glad this murdering scum will never kill again.

The original sentence was justified? I guess that means no one should ever get a second chance... EVER. I believe the Lord gave people second chances.
I guess Huckabee could have made the easy political decision and not allow anyone the chance to get out.... yeah that makes sense... if you're a politician.
The Governor stated he had about 1200 applications a year for consideration and 92% were denied. That means over his ten years as Governor there were about 1000 individuals given a second chance. Unfortunately there were at least two that I know of who killed after they were given a second chance. I guess you would want all 1000 of those people to stay behind bars.
In looking at the facts in this case, the guy was a repeat offender after his release in Arkansas. He had just been released 6 days prior to killing these 4 officers.
I'm sure Mr. Huckabee wishes he had a crystal ball, what he did have was a unanimous vote of the parole board and the recomendation of the sitting judge to reduce the time of the sentence.

To blame Mr. Huckabee for this event makes about as much sense as blaming this guys mother for having him. Mr. Huckabee had a part in the process early on, but it was years later when this event took place, not after he walked out of that Arkansas jail nine years ago!

This probably happens more often than any of us know.

Commuting the sentences of criminals that are convicted as juveniles of adult crimes is tricky business.

There is every chance that prison life solidified their violent tendencies.

The boy was 16 years old when he was given 107 years in prison, for a burglary and robbing a woman. No weapon was involved. We have murderers serving less time.

Huckiabee commuted the sentence to 47 years after the man had served 11 years. That's not releasing him or pardoning him. It was the parole board which unanimously voted to let him out and the sentencing judge which strongly supported the Governor's action.

After he moved to Washington state, he got into trouble again. One crime was child rape. That should have triggered the parole violation and kept hm in prison until 2015. This is where the system failed. The state of Washington let him out six days before his rampage.

Agreed.

I will go along with saying that Huckabee commuted too many sentences, too often.

But we need to remember, it was the parole board that let this guy out.

Having said that, I doubt I would have voted for Huckabee anyway. He's a FairTax guy, a Christian, and pro-life. Big pluses. But he spends waaay too much money for my tastes.

Right.

Lots of blame to go around...but Washington (state) holds the lion's share.

That's taking it too far, IMO.

Sure, there's the PC element, and the "hate-crime" folks that do look at the issue in only one direction.

But I've heard plenty of outrage over this incident. I think an overwhelming number of Americans support law enforcement, and were bothered by what went on.

And probably 99.99%+ of all Americans are glad this guy's taking a dirt nap.

It's already yesterday's news~Tiger Woods philandering already pushed it to the back page, but if the races had been switched they'd still be screaming..

This is what I have understood to be the truth also.

Agreed. This wasn't a "get out of jail card". Commutations of minors is incredibly tricky business. If this is all that Huckabee opponents can dig up, it certainly isn't much.
