don't these seats have an arm rest between them, do they move up or soemthing. because if they don't this man wouldn't be able to sit in 2 seats because of the arm of the seat.

Federal aviation authorities investigated an Internet photo showing a massively fat flier's flab oozing hazardously into the aisle of an American Airlines plane -- but said yesterday that before the flight took off, attendants decided to give the man two extra seats, apparently in line with safety rules.

Worried that the severely obese passenger would block the plane's aisle in an emergency, American cleared out the normal-sized guy in the adjacent seat by offering him a ticket on a later flight. Then, the American crew assigned the fat man two more seats. "The passenger in this case had a whole row to himself," said Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Laura Brown.

Sounds like it got resolved.

I feel bad for people with this problem. Thankfully I have never had to wrestle with weight issues.

I think that picture is a fake unless the man is 7' tall as well as that large. Note how much taller than the seat he is compared to every single other passenger on the plane.

But I think if a person is larger than the standard seat, they should pay for 2 seats. I like Paul's suggestion of charging for 2 seats and refunding if the plane isn't full. If they do not fit inside the two armrests, there's no question. They're too large.

The arm rests fold back up between the two seat backs. So one can sit on two seats and use the outside parts of the belts with an expander to hold them in.

He appears to be straddling the outside seat armrest which is usually fixed and not moveable - from my memory from flights I have taken.

If the picture is genuine - this guy is also a safety risk as he is blocking the aisle.

I recall a flight which took a few years ago in which a very large married couple had seats on either side of my wife. They both refused to move to different seats as seats were assigned and both refused to put down the arm rests.

The result was that my poor wife was crushed between two mountains of self-absorbed inconsiderate lard.

We both spent the flight alternating between my seat and pretending to need to use the restroom.

So yes, over sized passengers should be required to buy two tickets - or even three if necessary.

I am a BIG guy, no way around it (pun intended). If I were to fly, I would rather spend the extra money and get first class since it would about equate the cost of two seats anyway.

One thing about airplanes is that they keep making them so that they can squeeze more and more people on them. They do this by making the seats smaller and smaller. While I can see the $$$ reasons for this, I can also see how it is discrimination against anyone who is not a size 10 or less.

Dunno about that. I once dated a girl who weighed 95 lbs. She'd have flown for free.

Seriously, though, he should be charged for 2 seats, and if the plane isn't full, they can offer him a refund for one of the seats. The other passengers shouldn't be blamed for this man's girth.

It's a common complaint, but it just ain't true. What IS true, however, is that North Americans have changed in size (in fact, Disneyland recently had to spend millions of dollars retrofitting their "it's a small world" attraction to accommodate greater weight. Their previous boats were constantly bottoming out).

Another, and perhaps more crucial difference in airplane seats comes from the measurements between seats aligned vertically. This measurement, called the pitch, has changed considerably, in part due to the addition of reclining seats. Much discomfort in long flights comes from the inability to move one’s legs properly due to small pitches, not from the seat width. Removing the reclining feature would increase pitch, but would result in the inability to recline the seat, essentially trading one discomfort for another.

This from me, a seasoned business traveller.

I don't think it's fake, but I also noticed that this is just a big guy. Even if he didn't have any fat, he would still take up two seats.
