A new article posted by James White has brought to my mind a very simple question. Why are we suppose to ignore (overlook, laugh off, you pick the term) the lies Dr. Ergun Caner has told about his past and, at the very same time, be outraged by a Democratic politician who has done the same thing?

    Attorney General Richard Blumenthal (LINK)

    Dr. Ergun Caner (LINK)

Other than substance, I don't see any moral difference between what the two men have done. Both have misrepresented, lied about, their past in order to make themselves look more important (credible).

It is time for Christians, Calvinist or not, to stand up and demand honesty and accountability from all Christians (mainly in positions of leadership). The excuses put forward by men such as Norman Geisler are sickening (see letter on White's blog). No Christian leader should be coming to Caner's defense. Everyone, in leadership and in the pew, should be demanding honesty and accountability.

In 1Corinthians 5, the Apostle Paul is dealing with a church that allowed an unrepentant sinner to remain in their fellowship. Paul is shocked by this behavior. At Liberty University, we have a evangelical, Christian body that, at the leadership level, is refusing to deal with a brother who has openly sinned and yet refuses to repent (come clean about his past). It is time for Christian accountability at Liberty University and in the office of Dr. Ergun Caner. It is time to put this issue to rest. That can only be done by Dr. Ergun Caner publicly, in some format, confessing and repenting of his sin. Then, and only then, can everyone move on. As a Liberty University alumnus, I am grieved by this whole controversy. I am grieved that Dr. Ergun Caner has brought such shame upon such a fine school.

Well said and worth saying. You hit the nail on the head. I think if we all take the polarizing blinders off, we'll see it this way.

    Excellent post Martin.
Contrary to popular opinion, I like many others wish for the best for LU. But the best in this case, as always is honesty.

Hopefully Caner will repent. That would be the best case scenario.

    Cost to Liberty

I was wrestling about beginning my doctoral program at Liberty and "school x." The activities of Caner, etc., have made my mind up--and school x gets the nod.

Liberty University is a fine University and should not be judged by the likes of Ergun Caner. One bad apple does not spoil the whole bunch. There are many, many great professors at LU and I continue to recommend the school to everyone. That said, the leadership at Liberty Univ. needs to hold Caner accountable.

The "leadership" may yet exonerate him. Right now the leadership of Liberty is itself as complicit as Caner is in this whole mess. From the Twitters of Caner and his pastor -- Jonathan Falwell -- things are not going in the direction of making a biblical clean sweep of things. The Christian community and the world will hold Liberty and Caner accountable even if the latter gives him a pass.

Image builders are always concerned about their image because that is all they have to offer.

okay, everybody, this is quite embarrassing, but I am totally in the dark and absolutely, stupidly ignorant of what this Caner fellow has done, who this guy is, and why are his "allegations" being taken to task ?
    Please enlighten me.
I have seen quite a few threads about the guy, but skipped over them most of the time because I'm not all that too "in" when it comes to most personalities.
    Thank you in advance.

I'll let others fill you in, but it shouldn't be embarrassing for you. Caner is far removed from the "circles" in which you reside. Any knowledge of him or his ministry would be strictly extracurricular!:wavey:

You're right. Caner has to come clean in a public format -- in a comprehensive fashion. I think TomVols used the term -- "a drop em." Every conceivable question is asked at a press conference and Caner answers each and every one. It can't be done behind closed doors alone. Liberty shouldn't release a statement that Dr.Caner has confessed his deceitfulness in-house. NO. It must be done openly for the world to see. He has sinned publicly -- and must now repent publicly. Caner has lied to many audiences. Tapes were bought. Books were bought. Church congregations thought this minister of the Gospel was telling them the truth. Caner must own up to his lies. He is not a credible witness to the Truth -- when he has woven extensive untruths in his messages. He has been a bad witness for the cause of Christ. The world is paying attention. But I don't think that the leadership of Liberty is paying attention. If they exonerate him -- this whole mess will be far from over.

What an exaggerated bunch of malarky! The Calvinists are paying attention. Maybe a few others. Not much else. Certainly not the whole world. I do hope he comes clean if he needs to but the vitriol from Calvinists is equally shameful.

I disagree. A man who doesn't keep up with much stumbled across the CT write up and, despite being a fan of Caner's messages at conferences, he was appalled at the allegations and how they seemingly have legs. I kept my mouth shut to see how he reacted since I knew more about it than he. And he's no Calvinist. So this idea that this is somehow related to calvinism is just bunk.

The Christian world is indeed paying attention. Whatever happened to integrity?

Not bunk at all. This vitriol is all about Caner's strong views. (which by the way could have been presented better by him on many occasions) But most of the energy behind this whole mess comes from James White and the long lasting and very ridiculous heat between them. While Caner's statements need clearing up or admitted to there is most certainly and interest by Calvinists to see him fall. As far as the "Christian World" that is yet another exaggeration. There is just not that much interest in this except by those who want him destroyed. And if there are those who actually believe there is such an interest (as wrong as it is) then they should most likely reign in their own little attitude toward Caner.

In the end what ever wrong he may have done I do pray he repents.

Come again? It's all about his strong views?! No it's all about his habitual lying and stiff-necked pride in being unwilling to humble himself.

Wrong again. It was started by a Muslim -- Mo Khan. Debby Kaufman and her pastor Wade Burleson, Tom Rich (otherwise known as SBC Jax Watchdog),Turretinfan and others have kept the ball rolling with substantial facts.

Nonsense. We don't want to see him destroyed. He's a brother in the Lord who needs to confess and repent for his continual lies over the last nine years. He's been brash, prideful and inappropriate in his deportment as a Christian leader. He needs to be humbled for his own good -- SOON!

Agreed. The world is watching. Right now he is presenting a sad testimony of the Christian faith. It's no wonder that some unsaved folks refuse to have anything to do with Christianty when a celebrity serial liar is coddled by many professed believers. These unregenerate ones say "Truth doesn't mean much to those Christians when it comes down to it. When the President of a prominent Christian seminary is protected by his peers and those who have pointed out his deceptions are maligned then Christianity is not anything I want a part of."

The blog you mentioned has a sole purpose of working to destroy anything conservative. It has no credibility when it comes to motive. And I would find it difficult to trust anything coming out of Wade Burlesons' church. He has been quite the same way himself. He has quite a history. Being a calvinist and a liberal it is easy to see what would come out of his church. And your characterization of the situation lacks its own credibility. What peers have protected him and in what way? More exxaggeration

There is blood in the water and the sharks are in a feeding frenzy. I am absolutely sure the lost are won back by that.
