Yep.

That's why my Dad quit his union (the OCAW). Some goons came to the refinery gate where he was picketing and stabbed a guy who was crossing the picket line.

My father had medical training from his days in WWII and gave the man medical attention so he wouldn't bleed to death until they could get an ambulance there.

He was ostracized by other union members for helping "a scab", so he took a company job (a promotion) as soon as the strike ended. Prior to that, he had turned down the promotions thinking the union was looking out for him.

Terrible to hear. And a man is in the hospital for his wounds. I have wondered what I might do should some men come at my truck with bats. A person could be killed. I hope I never face something like that. But I do carry a .380 with me.

My dad was a coal miner--because he was in the union and a leader, he carried a fully-loaded .45 semiautomatic every day. In those days the problems were the company thugs. Things have changed.

During my working life, I have spent about 15 years, or about half my working like as a member of a union. Although, at the first company back in the 1970's we had a couple of strikes. Never did we encounter any violence like this, either from the union or the company.

I have always been a member of my union....I strongly support workers not being done over like a dog's dinner by unscrupulous employers.

I do not support criminal behaviour either.

I have had my tires cut and family threatened, (in a job years ago) so my experience (and thus viewpoint) is quite different.

Disclaimer: Of course not all unions are this way. I would say not even most. But there are quite a few that use intimidation and force. And depending on the area, authorities may or may not help you.

Now, I'm older and wiser. If I could go back, I would have turned those cretins in. The officials in Dallas/Ft. Worth (where this happened) would handle the issue. If I lived, however, in Chicago, or Pittsburgh...well, there's no need to contact anyone. You won't be helped.

Back in the 70's I worked at a plant that had two strikes in the eight years I worked there. The worse thing I ever witnessed or even heard about was the two sides shouting at each other. And, even that was rare, mostly what we did is stand around, walk and wait to go back to work.
