Incandescent light bulbs may be inefficient at producing light but during the dark months when the are on the most they help to heat the room and even out the room temperature.

Florescent bulbs last a long time if you NEVER turn them off. We have a light over the kitchen sink which is never turned off and the bulb has been replaced 3 times in 20 years.

The good thing about florescent bulbs not working when cold is that we will always be able to get appliance bulbs which are tougher, anyway. And I don't think any of the new types will work as an oven light.

In fact Bill, if your so inclined to get into Manhattan & go down 42nd & Times Square, you will see some of the marquees have changed their bulbs from regular to compacts....now there are full banks of them & in winter you'd see the bums & hookers standing under them for warmth. LOL

Yeah; I have a nice cool white one for the range hood light, and it serves as the night light. I had been buying bulbs like that from Chinatown (it used to be hard to find the cool whites in regular stores), and the ones I use as regular ceiling lights used to burn out much sooner than I would think, so I was concerned that this one staying on all the time would not last, (and had been looking for an LED bulb of the same color and brightness to put there, but they cost too much) but it has been going for two years, almost straight.

I personally love LED's but they are still at the stage of modification & reducing price. Ive got a few friends @ Phillips that are working on perfecting these baby's but have you gone to one of those Retail/Wholesale places like Home Despot & looked at the prices.....wow. Im also a big advocate for fiber optics for light & communications transmission....but @ what cost....tis the question.

Yeah; I wanted to get the nice spotlight they have, but the one equal to a $60 watt is like $69 or something. There are some smaller ones for $24, so I was thinking of trying one of those, though most of the fixtures I have would be better suited for a refular bulb shape.

Ask your friends if they are ever going to come out with a more consumer friendly version of the iColor Flex (a string of programmable color changing LED's, which sell for about $500 for a string of 50, and the contollers and DMX software are about twice that much!)

The one marquee I see that uses compact fluorescents (small twister versions encaded in round clear bulbs) is the main McDonalds on 42nd St. Then, you have the Hard Rock Cafe (former Paramout Theater), which has color changing LED's with fiber optics on its marquee, and a standard RGB signs in its sides.

Now all we need is for LED's to come down to under $10 million per bulb.

(exaggerated slightly...but man, are they expensive!)

You know that if there's a D in charge of the white house and/or Congress...there will be laws forcing us to buy LED's.


Oh, and add me to the list of folks who throw away CFL's in the regular trash can...and laff while doing so.

I can get 100W equivalent CF @ Wamart for 50 Cents.

I use all led's in my home and they last five times longer than regular light bulbs. Disposal is not a problem if your area has a disposal site. Mine go into a small plastic bag and eventually to the disposal site. Just don't break them in your hand.

Most likely McDonalds you're thinking about (in the main strip between 7th and 8th). The Disney theater (Amsterdam) a couple doors away might also have them
