Senators introduce law to ban 'crush' videos of animal cruelty

Washington (CNN) -- Three U.S. senators introduced legislation Monday to specifically ban so-called "crush videos" -- depictions of small animals being tortured to death by humans.

The legislation came in response to a Supreme Court ruling this year striking down a broader congressional law dealing with animal cruelty.

The bi-partisan Animal Crush Video Prohibition Act would criminalize the creation, sale and marketing of these specific kinds of videos. Penalties of up to seven years in prison would be possible.

The videos mostly depict women -- with their faces unseen -- stomping helpless animals such as rabbits to death with spiked-heel shoes or with their bare feet. The videos apparently satisfy a sexual fetish for those who produce and watch them, said animal rights activists who supported the new bill.

"Our legislation would ban animal crush videos that fit squarely within the obscenity doctrine -- a well-established exception to the First Amendment," said Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Arizona, a co-sponsor. "It also takes the important step of banning non-commercial distribution of animal crush videos, which is necessary given the nature of the Internet and the propagation of file-sharing and peer-to-peer networks that exist today."

The original law was too broad, this proposal isn't.

That's right folks...kill all the unborn babies you want, but leave those rabbits alone!

This bill is sponsored by a Republican. How about don't kill any unborn babies and don't kill rabbits by crushing them to death to satisfy the screwed up sexual desires of sick perverts?

Your point is?

I agree, but how about we worry about the babies first?

My point is that something like this is secondary to the murder of unborn children. You bring up that a Republican sponsored the bill, which means even more so that he is wasting his time. One of the issues that people vote Republicans in for is to do away with abortion. It's one of their party issues. He should be concentrating on that.

Matthew, these things aren't exclusive. I'm going to support this bill because it's a good bill and I'm going to continue my pro-life advocacy. Back on topic, what is your opinion of this proposal?

Hi mom! I didn't realize you were posting as a liberal on this forum under the pseudonym Paul3144!

I've given my opinion. I think it's a waste of time, energy, and resources until we are done fighting the bigger battles.

I disagree. These videos are immoral and there is a compelling government interest in banning these videos. If you get off on watching kittens being crushed by women, you're going to do something mental. You already are doing something mental. (I'm using "you" in a general sense, not referring to you personally.) Look, I'm not an animal rights nutjob or anything. There are legitimate reasons to kill animals. I'm a bit of a softie on that, so I don't want to do it myself, although I would if I had to. Crushing animals for the pleasure of [expletive]d up perverts is not one of those legitimate reasons.

I wish that you were this passionate about doing something to stop the mutilation murder of hundreds of thousands of the unborn every year.

Other than continuing to vote for the politicians that support and promote it that is.

I agree with you on the entire principle of the thing. My problem is that they shouldn't be concerning themselves with items like this until the more important stuff is done. They are not being good stewards of their time.

Do you support this bill or not? I've already discussed abortion ad nauseam. I've already specifically enumerated what pro-life actions I take in one of those threads. Please stay on topic.

Sure - it's fine for what it is.

But there is no comparison between the value of human life and animal life.

And yeah I know your position on abortion - you are against it but vote for pro-abortion candidates because to you there are other issues.

What issue is greater than protecting human life I can not imagine though.

Of course human life is more important than animal life. I never implied otherwise. BTW, I vote for pro-life candidates in the Democratic primary when they are on the ballot.

Well then you will have to run as a Republican - because you sure wouldn't get in office as a Demoncrat[sic] with that attitued[sic].

If that's the case, then so be it. If I were running for office versus a pro-choice Republican, who would you vote for?

The point is this: it is ridiculous that people get so upset over the death of animals, but are fine with millions of the unborn being murdered every year. I think the bill is a good thing, but why not get upset over the cruelty being shown to babies?

I am upset with elective abortion. I'm also upset with animal cruelty.
