Let's see. He didn't answer a question that nobody asked regarding a perfectly legal and wide spread practice.

And the problem is . . . ?

Yet another example of the old saying, "Just because you have the right to do something doesn't mean it's the right thing to do." He has every legal right to do it, just like all the others who do it. And they are all demonstrating their moral bankruptcy. I have no respect at all for any of them.

You seem to have missed the point (again). The writer of the article is complaining that the guy didn't answer a question the news people, including the writer of the article, never asked. If they want to blame somebody they can blame themselves for not asking the question. We used to have a saying in the Army, "If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem." The news media is whining about their own lack of due diligence!

Negative!!! The good sheriff knew he was going to retire (for the $$) Our newspaper tends to be more liberal - had there been any inclination of such greed, I know the Post Standard would have asked the questions. However, since this greed has not be done in the recent history, no one ever even thought about the possibility. (even when it was taken advantage of in the past, the County was in excellent financial condition.)
Running on the Conservative Party ballot line, the candidate was affirming he has conservative fiscal policies. But it looks like my Party can no longer assume anything in the future.

Currently Onondaga County is facing a budget problem - due to State mandated programs - such as Medicaid (eg- free taxi rides to & from doctor - anywhere in the range of 5 - 50 dollars one way). A big issue was the County Sheriff Helicopter. There was talk about selling it to save money - but a deal was worked out to keep it as it has been a great asset to police work and other emergencies.

The County was willing to work with the Sheriff - then Walsh goes an pulls this stunt.:tear:

And to repeat again the point "NO- The news media was not lacking due diligence! "

Here are my questions next time he runs for office and wants our Party endorsement
1. How many coffee breaks do you take a day, and for how long?
2. If you buy gas for your govt vehicle, how many gas stations do you drive by to get the cheapest gas
3. Would you give the President of the United States a parking ticket for illegal parking
4. Do you bring in a doctors note after being on sick leave.
Should we ask those ques tins - sounds sill don't they?.....

Yes, I respect him. It is no different than a person retiring and then being rehired as a private contractor doing the same job.

In Washington State we have a supreme court decision which rules that a pension is deferred compensation. If I sign on with the city or county and the pension law states that after 30 years I have a right to a 60% pension the I have a right to a 60% pension and the rest of my time is my own. If I should chose to be hired by the city to do another job then I should lose my pension? Or if a city retiree signs on a state job? Happens all the time. Earned Pension is earned pension, pay is pay.

The only thing "all men" have in common is time. Your watch (hopefully) runs at the same time as my watch.

Generally an employer only cares about total wage package. If an employee wants to put part of his total wage package into health benefits or into retirement benefits, the company or city or state wage negotiator doesn't care. All they care is how much total cost for how much work output. If 20 years later the employer reneges on the retirement, that's theft of past wages.

You could knock me over with a feather !!!!

I actually agee with billwald on something !!!

The sheriff worked under a contract that promised to pay him a certain amount at a certain time.

He is absolutely within his right to collect on those promises.

I had to laugh at this. How is this man doing wrong? he is not costing the government any more by doing what he is doing then if he did not get two checks. In fact he is saving the government money. If he did not get the job he would have taken full benefits and someone else would have gotten the job with full pay. Since he got the job he only gets 75% of the retirement with full pay so he is saving the government 25%. What is the problem except that some are covetous about another worth? I do believe that the law should be changed as it has been, but this man is exercising his rights and in doing so saving the government money. So why is he being made out a bad guy unless there is jealousy and covetousness?

What he is doing may be perfectly legal. But that doesn't negate the fact the he and many others who are doing this are morons and part of the reason our country is going in the hole economically. "I'm going to get what's mine and to hades with the rest of you," seems to be the prevailing attitude that is at work here.

When you file your tax return this year - and find yourself due a refund - will you accept it or give it back?

Big difference - tax refund (and if you get one - shame on you for giving the govt use of your money interest free) is money you earned directly.

A retirement is a benefit - yes you do earn it, but its meant for retirement.

Now to add to what Sag said - the State retirement is having to raise its premiums since benefits are starting to out-cost the income. Someone mentioned that the Sheriff is saving the State 24 grand a year since he is "retired" and that is one reason that the state retirement is going broke.

The big questions is why did he not inform the public before the election?

Also, the amount of retirement is a bit too high also. NY (and I'm sure other states or commonwealths as well) needs to take a close look at state retirement. The Republicans just recaptured the State Senate - I trusting that they will help to slow some of the spending.

Why should he announce to the public that he is going to collect on his rightfully earned pension? it is not going to cost them a single penny more if he is elected. In fact it will save them money.
Also what business is it of anyone except those in the state that he is in if the retirement benefit is too much? This is not about what is right, but this is about coveting. Those who see this as wrong are coveting his pension, plain and simple. it is jealousy
And finally there is no difference in the tax refund and the pension at least in principle. If it is wrong for this man to get what he was promised and do with his life what he wants then it is wrong for those who feel that way to get money back on taxes. In fact they should fill our a short form and not do deductions so that they do not get anything back unless they want to be hypocrites.

Well it is HIS retirement money. This is not a gift. This was part of a wage he earned through deferment. if he did not go back to work would you be satified in him collecting his retirement?

To those of you that have a problem with this, would have a problem with him taking his 401k payments (if he had any)?

If not, why not?

This is the same thing. He earned his retirement money, let the man take it any time he wishes.

Huh? He worked, it was part of the deal, and he's collecting on it.
If I do a job and am told I will get x amount, they better give me x amount and if they say I can get x amount and still work and make x amount, it'd be dumb not to do both! Sounds like a hard worker and shrewd business person. Both are admirable. Certain positionss carry risks and require much time, energy, and brains. He showed himself capable, now people want to say he is wrong for taking the payment set aside for the person who held that position? That's weird.

Too bad he claims party affiliation with a group I no longer feels accurately represents what they first stood for. Although I'd be inclined to forgive him if he sent me some of that cash.
