Bin Laden’s Death Likely to Deepen Suspicions of Pakistan
    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/03/world/asia/03pakistan.html

"...For nearly a decade, the United States has paid Pakistan more than $1 billion a year for counterterrorism operations whose chief aim was the killing or capture of Bin Laden...."

"Bin Laden was not killed in the remote and relatively lawless tribal regions....Rather, he was killed in Abbottabad, a city of about 500,000, in a large and highly secured compound that, a resident of the city said, sits virtually adjacent to the grounds of a military academy.....In addition, the city hosts numerous Pakistani forces — three different regiments, and a unit of the Army Medical Corps. According to some reports, the compound and its elaborate walls and security gates may have been built specifically for the Qaeda leader in 2005, hardly an obscure undertaking in a part of the city that the resident described as highly secure."

For a billion dollars a year, why wouldn't Pakastani officials have given him safe haven?

It's probably more telling that the US team that executed this operation had no Pakistani assistance nor did the military inform Pakistan of their intentions. Seems to me members of the Pakistani military and/or high government have been aiding bin Laden.

I don't have a crystal ball but I'd be willing to bet that the CIA has plenty of intel letting them know exactly who has been aiding the terrorists at this point. Time to save $1 billion a year.

I understand they got that intel from Gitmo.....so much for closing that down. Also why use Seals vs Green Beret? could it be they launched the raid @ sea so the Navy used there guys (which I approve of) but by launching that way they didnt tip their hats....loose lips! Just speculation on my part. Pentagon will have to release information eventually.

Pakistan is, at best, a reluctant "ally".

I believe that, of those in power in Pakistan, some of them undoubtably have known where Bin Laden was for a long time.

True. And we've had the intel for years. It was still very difficult to locate the courier who was the key.

We are looking at the end result of patience and persistence.

Methinks there are 'members of the Pakistani military and/or high government' that are now millionaires/billionaires from giving that rascal safe haven.

The U.S. kinda set themselves up for this, imo.

    Pakistani complicity or incompetence?

The answer to that question is yes!

Complicity in the Pakistani intelligence community.
Complicity in some of the Pak. military structure.
Incompetence in other parts of the Pak. military structure
Incompetence in the Pak. civilian leadership.

Hows about incompetence on the U.S. part? Or who knows, there could very well have been kick backs involved from Pakistani officials to U.S. officials to help keep the lid on him. I don't trust any of them. [sad to say]

They have very different job descriptions. Green Beret do a lot with indigenous people and training them to become force multipliers. SEALs especially Seal Team 6, are more for assault kind of events. That's not a hard and fast rule, but a basic generalization.
