Why the squelch on trying to teach kids that hard work pays off? I mean, I understand it from the "competitor" viewpoint; but I'm really, really not understanding the police enforcement....

Its about having power and using it. If ya got it why not use it and feel good!

Hear fish and wildlife raided Gibson guitar over some wood imports, confiscating hard drives, guitars, wood etc. Wood Gibson bought from a group that assures wood is properly imported. No charges leveled, just raid confiscate and show your power.

Years ago I informed IRS that I had mistakenly reported some withholding improperly at the instructions of a cpa. I told them I wanted to pay it but would have to do it on a payment plan. The letter I got back assumed I was a common criminal that most certainly would try to not pay. They threatened all sorts of terrible things if I did not pay. I found the mistake, another cpa told me not to tell them, I sent in the proper forms and their response was you dumb crook pay up and right now.

It is the way of government to grow out of control over time me thinks.

The real problem is when parents decide that they are above the law and help their children go against existing laws. The parents should have went down to city hall and got a permit if they had been good parents, or lobby their legislators to change the law. However they should not have allowed their child to sidestep the law. These are bad parents.

Apparently I'm much older than I thought, 'cause I can remember when we didn't even think about having to have permits to open a lemonade stand. We usually understood that it was typically a one-afternoon kind of deal, and we were encouraged by our parents because it showed initiative, responsibility, and whole slew of other attributes that were considered "good."

So Free, your answer is: the parents are bad because they didn't pay $500 for a permit, for a lemonade stand that had a return on investment of about $5.

I would say that anyone today that has not heard about the police shutting down these kind of business and does not know a permit is needed has no business with children.
You can bet they knew but thought the law would not be upheld. This is a trend today in our country oif deciding to draw lines different then the law.
Here is an example. Most people would not have a problem with getting a ticket if they were caught driving 100 MPH in a 55 MPH zone. However if they get pulled for running 56 MPH in a 55 MPH zone they are offended. These people are irresponsible parents because they teach their children that it is not about the law, but about their own standards. The same with the child's parents and the lemonade stand. They thought they could get away with it because it was a child. The officer did his job. It is too bad the parents did not do theirs.

Your attitude is exactly why the church is in so much trouble today. The church decides to scoff at the word of God and follow something of its own making. It is bound up in a spirit of lawlessness. If people cannot justify the obediance to the law in a particular circumstance then they become a law unto themselves doing what they think is best.
These parents scoffed at the law of man and it bit them. Hopefully the child at least learned not to break the law as their parents allowed them to do.

This does not hold water. Submission to earthly authorities in the U.S. is not the same as submission to a Roman dictator. The authority in the U.S. is the Constitution and the people. Authorities that do not adhere to these, are not "authorities" to be submitted to, they are criminals to be prosecuted and gotten rid of.

Apparently he missed the context of that text, including the qualification that the authority is acting in the public good, and against evil (Romans 13:3-4). When the government is murdering people and stripping peoples rights, we OF COURSE should not obey them. The apostles did not obey the authorities, when they were commanded to quit preaching!

This isn't the corner lemonade stand in Smalltown, U.S.A. we're thinking about, where the kids just got together and either hand-squeezed lemons or mixed up some powder and sugar and are selling it in a cup on their block.

These "kids" (their parents, actually) went to an event, (and eight blocks is nothing where a bike race is concerned), and in addition to lemonade were selling bottled and canned beverages.

You really think four-year-old Abigail said, "I'll bet there'll be a good opportunity to make some money at the bike race. Daddy, I want a lemonade stand."?

That is true but once a law is on the books we have procedures to follow to get it changed and your suggestion is anarchy and rebellion (lawlessness which God hates). Unless the law goes directly against a command of God we are to obey it and even in those times when we are permitted to disobey we have to accept the consequences of our rebellion.
