Crazy Jewish fellow from New York goes on a solo hike in the Cascades in the middle of winter and gets himself killed. Family doesn't want autopsy.

I've Witnessed Numerous Autopsies...

...and if there were a way to avoid it for a loved one, I'd certainly no sign off on one NOT being done.

I know to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord, but every autopsy I've attended is like a scientific butchery. I know it doesn't hurt the departed, but, I'd have a hard time thinking of the body of my loved one going through the procedure.

The ones that bothered me most were of infants, who died from SIDS. The younger the person, the more it upset me.

In a lot of cases its obvious that its either been an accident or natural causes. I don't see how they could suspect criminal acts in this case.

THAT is more offensive than not honoring religious beliefs based on the possibility that there may have been foul play and there's an obligation to ensure the death was an accident.

Normally I'd agree that no autopsy should be required. It's tradition to have a burial right away and a simple service. But...if I was family and there was any doubt about the manner of death, I'd want to know anyhow AND I'd be willing to let the authorities do their job to determine if a crime was committed. There are times when one has to make exceptions to the rules they believe in. This sounds like it could be one of them.

If one must stress he was Jewish for the sake of the story, they could have at least said "Jewish man."

This was a human, not an animal. At least say "Death of Jewish man." If that is the attitude surrounding this case, they probably ARE dealing with ignorance more than a true need for an autopsy. At the least, it makes me wonder if they truly suspect foul play or just want to do an autopsy on "the Jew" and push things because of that. UGH!
