Should perfume be banned

In large, open places, such as malls, perfume doesn't bother me. It's when we go to church, or intimate places, like the homes of others, and we're up close that perfumes bother me. Sometimes I want to tell ladies that one spritz is really enough!
I am allergic to rose oil in perfumes, I call it migraine in a bottle. Some air fresheners are just as bad.

I wholeheartedly agree!
And I feel the same way about scented candles! BLECH! I'll get a migraine or feel nauseous in a heartbeat.

Back in 2007, I had two ear surgeries to remove an infection; after the first one, I became sensitive to smells. I literally could smell things I hadn't been able to smell before. For the second surgery, even though we told the pre-op nurse I was allergic to iodine; even though we told everybody the morning of the surgery I was allergic to iodine; even though I had the same doctor from the first surgery; the doctor scrubbed the area with betadyne. I had a severe allergic reaction. For months afterwards, there were times I had to leave church because the perfume smells overwhelmed me. There was one woman at work that would come into my cubicle area, and I'd have to ask her to leave; and then I'd have to go outdoors for a few minutes to recover.

Yes I can well imagine.... go into a RC church when they are conducting High Mass & take a whiff. If you've never smelled burning frankincense, it's quite an experience ....actually an assault (but they still do it).
But for me, this new smell called "Warm Vanilla Sugar" that allot of gals are wearing today gives me fits.

I am also allergic to perfumes, after shave lotion and cologne. I've had to get up and move to a different seat in church because of it. Some people seem to bathe in their perfume or whatever, or at least they slap it on very generously--maybe instead of bathing like one guy I knew in the Air Force. He would come back to the barracks after work, drown himself in cologne and take off to do whatever he did after work. The stench of perfumed body odor got so bad that the barracks reeked of the stench. We threatened to strip him, drag him into the shower, and give him what was called a "G.I. party. That meant we would have scrubbed him down with stiff scrub brushes. All it took was one threat for him to clean up his act.
We had one guy in one church who not only didn't bathe, but he didn't even try to cover up the stench with anything. The stench got so bad that visitors were complaining about it. He was talked to in the manner prescribed in scripture but wouldn't listen or offer to bathe. He said, "You don't have the right to tell me I have to bathe." He was given the ultimatum to either bathe or leave and not come back. He chose to leave.

It's a shame when rules must be put in place because people either don't have the common sense or human kindness to not do simple things that cause discomfort and/or pain to others.
Lavender is my trigger. I've had to leave church, blood pouring out of my nose, because of live plants on Easter. (the lillies) As much as I love the scent of amber, I recently discovered that it triggers migraines.
In one church, where our choir was made up of about a dozen people, I asked the director if we could ask people not to wear perfumes. He told me that wasn't fair. I've had to leave choirs, Bible study groups and other small groups where we were seated very close or in a smaller room.
In other words, those of us with sensitivities have to arrange our lives around other people's choices. However, I don't think it would really help much. It would be too restrictive for others to all work around my sensitivities or those of others with sensitivities. That stuff is everywhere. I have to buy certain dye free, perfume free laundry soap, dish soap, and am limited with perfumes, conditioners, and body soaps. Some cleaners are off limits and most home scents.
As nice as it would be if everyone did change their lives for me, I don't think it is possible. What might help more would be if manufacturers quit using so many chemicals in anything and everything, along with people realizing it's not good for them, for others, or for the environment.
We could all go back to baking soda and vinegar. WOOT! Cheap, effective and little chance of reacting. I hate the smell, but it goes away after a bit.

My friend and I went to a mall the other day with a Neiman Marcus and had fun checking out the prices and someone came over with an expensive perfume. I did a little spray of it and it smelled nice then walked away. When I went to bed that night, I kept waking up to the smell and while it was a pretty smell, I just didn't like smelling it and finally had to get up and scrub my wrist to try to get rid of it (and it didn't come off easily - must have been the 24 carat gold flakes!) so I could sleep!! Bleck!!! I much prefer just the smell of my handmade soap and that's it!! Forget the stupid perfume!

Could it be that they can not smell? I have that disibility -, my nose does not work. I can go a week without a bath and it does not bother me. Now, I realize that is would bother others, so if in doubt - in the tub without a pout.
Just keep that in mind, if you have any chuch goes who smell - they not even realize it.

Most people have B.O. because they are too lazy to bath. I work in hospital lab on night shift, so I have to draw blood from time-to-time. The other night, I drew blood from a woman-in her late 30's, maybe early 40's-and she and her husband stunk to high heaven. My question is why do people go to an ER stinking? I used to work in a supermarket, and the first of the month, it seemed like I was slopping the hogs, instead of carrying out groceries. PHEW!!!!
Yeah, that can be an issue for some people, but a deeper issue is why, oh WHY, are you going without a bath for a WEEK?! I've occasionally skipped a day, but felt absolutely disgusting for it. At least a quick wash of vital areas and a fast rinse on a daily basis if one is that adverse to daily cleaning.
I do think there are some people whose body odor is often non-offensive. When I did a complete vegetarian diet, it was uncommon to need deodorant on a daily basis. I could also smell someone who ate meat from a mile away, even if they were perfectly clean, simply because there's a certain smell to humans when they follow certain diets. The worst smelling ones are the ones who eat red meat, especially if it is fried or they eat a lot of fried foods.
I absolutely hate the way I started to smell in this state. LOL It's about impossible to have a healthy diet at all, let alone a vegetarian one. These people even fry their pickles! Crazy I tell ya...
Oh, and men...if you have a forest under your pits, please take some scissors and trim it down because if you don't, you just have deodorant clinging to your armpit hair and it does no good. While I'm at it, please stop wearing sleeveless shirts if you wear solid deodorant. It clings in these nasty little balls to your hair and when you lift your arms, we're not averting our eyes to prevent lust or anything, we're just really grossed out. Thank you. Even when we're on the sailboat and can't always get a shower every day, there's nothing like a quick sink "bath". It's amazing what a bit of soap and water in the sink can do for someone but I have to say, I LOVE me a hot shower.

When I was in the Army, we would be in the field for a week to 10 days - no shower - never bothered me (nose doesn't work) Now that I am in garrison ever day - thats another story - in fact, now I am a Ford Car salesman - so I have to be sure. As I said before "if in doubt - in the tub without a pout."
And likewise before you chew a "smeller" out - keep in mind he may not realize he smells. Please use Christian charity - even if they can smell.
Think of it this way - if a blind person walked into something, are you going to chew him out? Of course not, he has a disability. Likewise, I along with others have a disability with our nose - please give us due consideration.

Lilies used to drive me bonkers until I discovered a little secret.....pull the pollen buds off the stamens and the allergens are gone! It's not the scent of the lilies it's those buds!! Boy was I a happy, happy camper that Easter!! They'd banked the whole altar with dozens and dozens of plants and the choir I was directing was doing a cantata right among them...it was a choice of the flowers or me almost, I coudldn't stand there and direct for the sneezing and running eyes. After pulling out those pollen buds not one more sneeze.
Oh Salty, I definitely do empathize with such people, my husband being one of them!
It's fun when, on occasion, he DOES catch a whiff of coffee brewing or food cooking because it happens so little. It's especially nice if it's ME that's cooking and he can actually smell it, since smell is part of enjoying food so it's a little sad when he can't taste differences in some stuff because of that, but it's also VERY cool when he can!
Us wives have secret little tips we use on our smelling deprived spouses if, say, their deodorant wears off too early in the day or they fell asleep after work, in order to help them out without them knowing. I'll never tell what they are though. :laugh:
It's fun when, on occasion, he DOES catch a whiff of coffee brewing or food cooking because it happens so little.
