More than 1,200 files on suspected molesters in the Boy Scouts of America were made public Thursday, lifting the veil on decades of alleged abuse in one of the nation’s oldest youth organizations.

Times investigative reporter Jason Felch and producer Ken Schwencke discussed the story and The Times database produced from the files in a Google+ Hangout this afternoon (see video above.)

I remembered the thread entitled "Kudos To The Boy Scouts" and thought it might be interesting to go back and have another look at the replies in light of this new information.

    This is my personal favorite.

    And then there's this.

I read the oath and noted that being a child molesting pervert isn't being morally straight either.

Within any organization that large, there will be bad apples. It shows the importance of being extremely proactive in rooting them out and keeping them out.

Over two decades, the Boy Scouts of America failed to report hundreds of alleged child molesters to police and often hid the allegations from parents and the public.

A Los Angeles Times review of 1,600 confidential files dating from 1970 to 1991 has found that Scouting officials frequently urged admitted offenders to quietly resign — and helped many cover their tracks.

Volunteers and employees suspected of abuse were allowed to leave citing bogus reasons such as business demands, "chronic brain dysfunction" and duties at a Shakespeare festival.

    CONTINUE . . .

Evidently the morally straight people in the Boy Scouts had a different approach. Protecting the image of the Boy Scouts instead of protecting the boys entrusted to it.

I have a question for those who keep telling me there can be no conspiracies to cover up crimes in large organizations for long periods "because someone would talk" but yet here we have a large organization that has for years been doing exactly what you all keep telling me cannot be done. How do you explain this?

Exactly who are those who keep telling you that?

Your vague accusation sounds a bit like one of your conspiracy theories...

    Short on proof.

Now we have an example of another long term conspiracy and cover up in the Lance Armstrong doping case. This went on and on but no one talked.

I've been told for years here that wide long term conspiracies such as these cannot exist because someone would talk but yet here is more proof they can exist!

    How can this be?

You said that already but failed to answer my question.

    WHO told you this?

I wonder how these kooky conspiracy theorists that are spreading these lies and rumors about the Boy Scouts and Lance Armstrong can sleep at night.

"Gay" can be "morally straight" as defined by the Boy Scouts thus there is no violation of an oath. Further, stating one is "gay" is not an admission of doing nasty things with other males many more than stating one is an alcoholic is an admission that one is a practicing wino.

Hiding (not reporting) child abuse by people with this sort of authority over children is a criminal offense.

Still it seems that there had to be alot of conspiring going on between alot of people to keep this quiet for so long.

I mean everyone knows vast conspiracies cannot exist in the new information age. Surely the watchdog media who we trust to keep us fully informed would be all over it at the very start.
