CIA Director David Petraeus submitted his letter of resignation Friday, after admitting to an extramarital affair.

Petraeus, in a message to staff, said President Obama accepted his resignation after the two met on Thursday afternoon. Petraeus said that he asked "to be allowed" to step down.

"After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours," Petraeus said. "This afternoon, the President graciously accepted my resignation."

There are few sins that have such far reaching impacts as our sexual sin. I pray he comes to repentance and restoration.

Yes.

That does not mean it wasn't used as an excuse to get him out of DC and therefore unaccountable for his part in the Libya fiasco.

I am starting to wonder if there is going to be a mass exodus to try to stay away from accountability. But I fail to see why they could not call them back for testimony and questioning.

Do you actually believe this?!?

Yeah, I try to avoid being too much of a conspiracy theorist, but as soon as I heard this news (initial report I heard only stated "for personal reasons" and did not cite an affair), I was skeptical. I honestly thought it has to do with something about Benghazi, or that Petraeus was perhaps upset with the election results and no longer wanted to serve in the administration. Rather wild guesses, of course, but they crossed my mind.

I think back to Harriet Miers' decision to withdraw herself from consideration for appointment to the US Supreme Court. While the official story always claimed she "jumped into the pool" (if you will), I always assumed she was pushed. Such is politics, I suppose.

One wonders if the public will get more insight as time rolls along.

Good point. I thought that as well.

Another good point, one I didn't consider. You guys are all over it today! :)

Why should they run? Don't they think Obama will protect them?

ok. that one was below the belt....and no, I couldn't type it with a straight face.

Hillary has talked about retiring. Holder is talking about it.

We should remember that it is not entirely unusual for people to leave these positions. It is unusual to have so many involved in such colossal and high profile screw-ups.

Yes, because sneaking around and lying to people are not desirable traits in a spy!

One can only wonder (I don't really) what the replacements for these vacancies will look like.

The hearings are a farce. The American people and the mainstream media (as well as obama) have proved they don't care what happened in Benghazi. Most of the electorate it seems are only concerned with their own little vaccum worlds and what they can get, not for the good of the country.

And let's face it. A man who is in an extramarital affair is preoccupied with the next tryst and skulking around trying to cover his tracks so the Mrs. doesn't find out. He couldn't care less about Benghazi or any official duties, just keeping his own backside out of the grinder between the sweetie pie and the Mrs.

I never did care for the General and never could put my finger on exactly what it was. Well, now we know, don't we?

After the way the election went Tuesday night, I will never be amazed again at anything that happens either in this administration or in this country.

We can moan and complain here on the BB, but having these so-called hearings are a farce. Four Americans are dead and really, there are very few outside of their immediate families, that really care it seems. The Dems don't care. Their leader doesn't care. Obviously the CIA doesn't care and the State Dept doesn't care. Perhaps only the military cares, but who is to say? If the American people are so stupid as to vote back the same structure of government - a Dem Senate, Dem WH, and Rep House, then the Repubs might as well pack it up and go on home for the next 4 years.

Obama was right, "elections have consequences." Well, the hammer is about to come down on the sickle.
