What about wood heat? I'll translate that for those of you south of the M-D Line... FAR-wud.

Ann, spot on with those temps. My folks used to keep their house so hot you could make candles without an outside heat source. The paint on the woodwork started to bubble up. They were two degrees from being able to smelt iron. It's 60 in here right now.

 

We use natural gas with central air/heat. I have a small propane heater to use in emergencies. If it's real bad I'd send my bride and kids to my parents house (two fireplaces). My plan, if God keeps us where we are, is to put in a wood stove.

 

mont974x4, budget for at least one replacement rear window for your truck if you go to wood heat. Believe me when I tell you.....

Oil fired forced air heat is real popular in Upstate NY. I had a church that would run through 100 gallons of the stuff a week when it was mild. Fuel oil is running $3.68 a gallon right now. That's almost $1500 a month just to heat the church building.

It's -12 right now. The weatherman says it'll bottom out around -15 by sunrise. That'll freeze the snot in your nose!

 

LOL Padre, I am no tenderfoot when it comes to wood heat...or busted out rear windows.

It's been pretty mild here. We've only had a few days below zero so far. We've had a few good snows though. Bro. Curtis is about 4 hours from me, and his area usually gets more snow than mine I think.



BTW....we don't have oil heat. We only have natural gas in town. Some folks, especially out of town, use propane. I don't know what propane is going for but even the coldest months don't cost me more than $150 for natural gas. My house is about 2300 sq feet, including the full basement.

 

Chain saw, splitting maul, two new windows and the cost of the add-on later and madre says, "How exactly is this saving us money?" Pellet stoves are all the rage now. There is a pellet plant about 5 miles from here. I've never crunched the numbers but folks seem to like their performance.

 

I have heard very good things about pellet stoves. I don't have any personal experience with them though.

 

We have steam heat in our section of town. Many parts of town had to convert to other heat sources, but the local hospital keeps the steam heat - so we can too.

 

Khakis, golf shirt, no socks -- in January. Much more comfortable.
