Could North Korea hit the United States with a ballistic missile? Could it mount a nuclear warhead on the tip of that missile?

The short answers to these questions are “in theory maybe, in practice probably not” and “no, not yet.”

    http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/DC-Decoder/2013/0124/Could-North-Korea-hit-the-US-with-a-missile
    ----------------------

Almost as soon as this latest threat surfaced, weapons experts laughed it out of the room given its ambitious assessment of North Korea's weapons capability. "How clumsy of #NKorea to accidentally display their US Mainland Striking Plan -- with ICBMs that don't exist," tweeted Mark Fitzpatrick, director of the nonproliferation and disarmament program for the International Institute for Strategic Studies. "If North Korea tried very hard and got lucky, they might be able to develop and ICBM version of the Unha-2 in five years," he later told FP in an e-mail exchange. Speaking to the country's missile range specifically, IHS Jane's Defense Weekly editor James Hardy wrote that "there is little to no chance that it could successfully land a missile on Guam, Hawaii or anywhere else outside the Korean Peninsula that U.S. forces may be stationed."

Do they need to hit us...or just close to us?

If someone sticks a gun in my face, even if I believe it to have no bullets, I take it seriously anyway.

Makes me wonder if China is behind all this.

It's guess work. North Korea's so-called nuclear bomb tests have yielded about 6-7 kilotons. I say "so-called" because no radiation was measured.

It depends on the height of the explosion over the USA, the yield of the bomb, and the type of EMP bomb. A 10 kiloton bomb can produce a large EMP.

A large nuclear device exploded about 250 miles over Kansas could affect the entire continental U.S., but the effect of the pulse would be diminished as you move away from Kansas. Exploding the bomb at a lower altitude would create greater damage but with less range.

What's the point of speculating? North Korea doesn't have rockets that can reach our mainland. The article is a scare tactic. Gotta have a boogie man so we can keep funding the U.S. war machine. [Now I'm sounding like Poncho...]

Its a thought, however, I don't think China is that crazy.

Economics rules the world right now and any aggressive (or even defensive) act on China's part would be like a economic nuclear warhead going off all over their country.

I think Kim is just this crazy.

And I should add: I don't for a second believe he has a rocket that can reach Japan much less anywhere remotely close to the US and that includes the tip of Alaska.

ITL - Poncho's not really that far off. It's just that sane, rational people can't fathom a mindset that says those types of actions are justifiable and acceptable, and therefore find it hard to believe it's possible.

We have the same trouble accepting Charles Manson, Jim Jones, etc., etc.

I would be very surprised, if China has a vested interest in the lunatic actions and posturings of North Korea. They are quietly taking over the world through economic means.

    Just a thought to ponder........

When God destroyed the earth with water, He promised he would not use that method of destruction again.

When God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, He gave not such promise that He wouldn't do that again.

In June the SCOTUS will render a ruling that will either hold up or invalidate that a marriage is between a man and a woman.

While we wait to see if we are "officially" another Sodom and Gomorrah, a saber is rattling* in the east. Seems there are many who scoff at the capability of this young** man to carry out his threats. The only thing he is doing is rattling his sword. He has no venom.

But is that true? Can God use him to bring judgement upon a fallen nation?

Can young** rattlers* deliver a fatal strike?
    Something to ponder..............

Didn't Kim ask Obama through Rodman to call him and that he didn't want war? Why didn't the President take that opportunity to open lines of communication? Did he scoff that it would be coming from the mouth of a jackass?

    Well, I didn't start it.

The idea that the U.S. should conduct foreign policy under the direction of a brutal dictator via a brain-dead former NBA player is ludicrous.

Almost as stupid as the idea that the U.S. in "on alert" for a N. Korea nuclear strike.

Did you forget Mikhail Gorbachev running in the streets to shake American hands? Not very orthodox but it worked! Sometime gotta roll with the punches.
