A Sonoma State University student was ordered to remove a cross necklace by a supervisor who thought other students might find it offensive, in a case that prompted even one campus official to speculate that “political correctness got out of hand.”

Audrey Jarvis, 19, a liberal arts major at the northern California university, said she had no choice but to seek a “religious accommodation” in order to wear the cross. Her lawyer said she deserves an apology, and the school seems ready to oblige.

“It’s amazing in this day of diversity and tolerance on university campuses that a university official would engage in this type of obvious religious discrimination,” said Hiram Sasser, an attorney with Liberty Institute, which is representing Jarvis.

Jarvis was working for the university’s Associated Students Productions at a June 27 student orientation fair for incoming freshmen when her supervisor told her to remove the two-inch-long cross necklace, according to Sasser.

Silly overreaction. When did Sonoma become a state?

Ah, yes. Tolerance. We're tolerant of everybody except for Christians.

Reminds me of a skit written by Chesterton.

All I can say is: Christians should NOT be surprised as Jesus warned the disciples about the world hating them because the world hates Him.

But I'm sure the school wouldn't bother stopping a Muslim student from wearing something from their religion - or stop a gay student from wearing a gay pride t-shirt. Unbelievable. IF she had a uniform that she must wear to work, then I could understand if you were not allowed to wear personal jewelry but that's not the case here.

California has three tiers of post secondary public education. The top tier is the Unversity of California system (e.g. UC Berkley, UCLA, et al). The second tier is the State University system, (e.g. San Francisco State University, Sonoma State University, et al.). The htird is the Community College system (two year schools formerly know as County\Junior Colleges)

No one except a few Christians ever objected when Madonna wore a cross all the time back in the 80's.
