I did a quick search on the forums to make sure this hasn't come up before, and the search didn't return anything about it. So I am posting this here. I am surprised it wasn't a topic on here already, actually.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8iSAPKI2w8&sns=fb

This is a link to where a pastor in mid-message wakes a man up who starts to snooze, and then proceeds to insult a church member, and then publicly call out some others by name.

It amazes me that people like this man exist. I can understand hard preaching. But this isn't preaching. This is (imo) a self-inflated man using his position of power to give himself more power.

Ok. I searched things like "Pastor insulting congregation", etc. Like I said, I was amazed when I turned up nothing. But I guess it's old news.

I got tired of watching that and stopped it before the end. But does anyone know if that's staged or not? If it ain't, I'd like to be where that guy's "preaching," and look like I'm sleeping, hoping he calls me on it, because I'd stand up and roar back at him to see if he really wants to take me on.

I just watched the video. And I must say, at first glance, I would say that this is a pastor who has probably pastored this church for 15, 20, or even 25+ years. He speaks like he's a member of a family who really loves them so he's openly rebuking them and giving them God's truth.

Asking you Sapper Woody because by the avatar. I think you would probably know better than the rest of us. Do drill sergeants do what he did?

For those of you whose kids play sports, do the coaches get in their faces like that?

I'm just asking because people will endure a lot of things that have nothing to do with Christ that far exceed a rebuke. But Pastor Stanridge looks to be openly rebuking folks that he genuinely loves and everyone jumps on him because he's fed up with the disrespect and the flippancy with which so many folks come and act like they are worshiping.

Unless I see something else, I don't think I really have that much of a problem with this video.

I know this is just a few minutes when this pastor apparently had a melt down, but this is certainly not preaching. It is a self centered pity party. Look at how many times he says I.

The process of publicly humiliating and isolating those that oppose you or you disagree with does not belong in the pulpit. What we see here is cult like control and a ministry that appears to be centered on a man (cult) instead of on Christ.

The issues the preacher brings up are trivial, one that falls asleep, one that has missed some services, and a kid who has been “hanging out” in the video room.

My first impression to this is to ask “What is the real problem here?” There is something else going on.

If this were my church and my pastor I would try to meet with him privately and ask what else was going on. It may be that Pastor Standridge was simply worn down by the many small things, but there may be something else more serious going on that was never mentioned.

Totally disagree. When you've pastored folks in a smaller church in a smaller community for a while and you're basically all part of an extended community family, you can often times say exactly what he said in terms of rebuke because EVERYBODY( and I do mean EVERYBODY) knows exactly what he's talking about and why he is saying what he is saying.

They may have gotten a little upset, but family can tell ya stuff that other folks won't dare question you on.

I have a bigger problem with the person who posted it on the internet. This was family business. A public rebuke in front of family that was not, I'm pretty sure, intended to be posted all over the internet so that non-Christians and Christians alike could complain about the HOW.

I see nothing wrong with his public rebuke that was intended for the sheep which God has placed him there to shepherd.

This is a little town of 8000 or so folks. They are family. He's been there for 26 years.

Rebuke is not always pretty. Often times people become puffed up and think they did not deserve that.

Look at when Jesus was rebuking the Pharisees. He called them white washed graves, children of the devil, hypocrites, ect. Look at John 8, where it says there are Jews who believed him, but Jesus rebukes them and calls them children of the devil. Jesus was the ultimate example of love, yet he said and did these things.

When Pastor Jim was saying "not worth 15 cents" and such, I equate that to the same type of harsh rebuke that you would see from Jesus, Paul, James, or any true man of God towards his flock. And such a thing is so sorely missing in churches today.

I grew up in a small church as a kid that I attended until lI left for college. Old country church made up of family and people who were like family, warts and all. The pastor had liberty to say certain things in rebuke to us openly because it was family and private between family members.

Reading your response reminds me of the scene in Animal house where the new pledges are being spanked and the Kevin Bacon character keeps saying, "Thank you sir, may i have another."

This isn't an issue of length of tenure or how much you "love" your people. This is spiritual abuse.

It amazes me anyone would defend this garbage!

"You're worthless, I love you" is the most frightening thing a person can ever hear in their life. It is the heart of an abuser. RUN RUN RUN.

Although the "building a kingdom in the video room" part was pretty dang hilarious.

However, that whole thing is very scary when you think about the mindset and that this mindset is so blatant all over this state (and half the nation) and what it does to people.

"I'm the real deal. You won't find this anywhere else."
"You need to be submissive to me."
    "You're worthless, I love you."
    "I'll leave you right now."

Sounds like an abusive husband. He loves his wife, but threatens her with abandonment if she doesn't do as he commands. Tells her she's worthless but claims to love her, all in the same breath. Claims nobody else will love her like he does.

That's not love. That's sociopathic behavior. I bet everyone in his church swears up and down that he's the sweetest person and just misunderstood. They are convinced.

That is sad. Their healing will take a long time once they get out of that mess and try to heal and find the real truth in the confused havoc he's creating in their hearts and minds.

Well we will have to disagree then Zaac.

The only one I see puffed up is Pastor Standridge. You don't rebuke people like that in public, those should have been private conversations.

Skiatook Oklahoma has a census population (2010) of only 8,000 people but is also recognized as the “fastest growing” suburb of Tulsa, minutes from both Tulsa International Airport and downtown Tulsa.

Immanuel Baptist Church’s new auditorium, built in 2010 seats 750. This is not a small country church or a small community. My town has less than 800 people and while I have pastored several different churches over the years I have never led one with an attendance over 100. The average baptist church in America has a membership under 50. Pastor Standridge can seat 15 times that many.

Pastor Jim Standridge has been there for 24 years.

Yes Gina I think you made a good comparison.

It does sound a lot like an abusive marriage. He only hits me because I deserve it. I know he really loves me.

I disagree. This appears to be a rebuke of folks he knows as family. The dynamics are a little bit different than most folks are used to. But I've seen it before.

People are jumping to conclusions based upon a five minute clip that should have been private and between the shepherd and his congregation.

The video went viral because the world wants to show Christians in a bad light. I expect the world to have a problem with it. But seemingly a lot of Christians don't understand rebuke.

Aside from all the other points made, it does not seem someone is really bright whose salary depends on offerings from the congregation he is insulting, and not only that, he could be ousted with called business meeting. One does not bite the hand that feeds you.

I have been the pastor of a small church in a small town for 15 years. If you look at the definition of small town church, you'll see Osprey, FBC. This is about him: First personal singular is used throughout. "I'm important"

This wasn't between the pastor and the congregation. He records his messages for publication. This was meant for others to see and be warned. There's no jumping here.

He asked if the cameras were still rolling. Then published the sermon online.

Zaac, what worries me most is that you keep analogizing this as a "family." As Gina pointed out, Christ so loved the church that He gave Himself for it; and as the passage goes on to say, men ought to love their wives as their own bodies; no man hates his own flesh, but nurtures and cherishes it; and fathers shouldn't provoke their children to wrath.

You're making excuses for an abusive pastor. Yet you take Christians on this board to task for acting the same way towards specific sins, such as homosexuality.

One has to wonder if you're not just stirring the pot; or if you actually believe abuse within a family unit is acceptable.

Oh, and please allow me to answer a question you asked Woody: this was most definitely NOT the same as a drill sergeant yelling at someone. You see, a DI has the most awesome and terrible duty and responsibility in the military: he/she has to break a human being down and re-train them to respond to orders instantly and without question, up to and including sacrificing their life.

Not the same at all. But I don't expect our brethren who haven't served to understand that.
