Did anyone experience the teenage degenerates walking out at McDonalds or BK today? I wonder how it went? I saw a video clip just now on Fox news that showed a guy carrying a sign stating "I can't survive on $7.25 an hour", did anyone tell him these jobs aren't meant to be a permanent bread winning job? I'm sure most if not all of us in here worked the fast food circuit when in High School, Did you expect that to be your job until you died? These guys want $15 per hour, LOL, I don't think the skills match that wage. Do any of these punks want to stay at McDonalds for a 45 year career? Not much ambition in our youth today, how sad.

I put a lot of this on the home and the education system. These are entry level job. Like when I was in my teens and before, paper route, plowing fields, harvesting crops, cutting grass working at the gas station and so on.

Yes but the point is still these fast food jobs are just entry level jobs are not meant to provide a living for a family or even an individual

I love the interview with the McDonald's franchise owner (I think it was Cleveland?) who said any of his employees who partake in the job action will be freed up to protest as much as they would like; i.e. they would be fired.

    Good for him.

Fast Food Strikes: These type of jobs generally pay low to start, and do not treat their workers well. Such jobs are generally designed for high school and low skilled people. Such workers cant expect to earn what a skilled person earns when they lack the skills. The best way to protest is to get new job skills to find better paying jobs and get treated better. So why strike? why not just quit and move on to another career.

I once had a roommate whom had a career of FF type jobs. The guy was super lazy, did not drive, and had zero ambition.

An increase to $9 or $10/hr might be more reasonable but then again it may not be. These workers need to be encouraged to BETTER their skills and find a better job. If they are in a bad job market, then RELOCATE somewhere else.

Exactly. Such jobs are very temporary. But what do you say brother of those living in bad job markets and locations? Shasta Lake City was such a place where I lived for 9 months. Very beautiful but very little jobs and lots on welfare. What does one do in such a place? What I did was I RELOCATED to a better market.

I don't know what the solution is the wage issue is but I do know that not all people who work for min wage are teenagers. I work at a clothing store and have to dress very well (which costs money!), be very professional, and know how to dress women to look beautiful. I have to know about fashion in order to build them a wardrobe. Yet I was started out at min wage. If I please my managers and corporate, I'll get a raise, but not much.
Apparently people think that min wage workers are all teenagers, ignorant, or just lazy. But every time you walk into a retail store, you are being helped by min wage workers. Some are young and using it to earn enough money to party but many are my age and work hard and the public depends on these people. We have become a society of college grads and have forgotten about all the thousands of jobs that have to be done daily to serve our needs that a college grad would never do.
I was a stay at home mom, wife of 33 yrs when my husband decided he didn't want me anymore. I had no choice but to get a low paying job as I have only 1 yr of college and that was 35 yrs ago.
There are many women in my same position. And I am blessed that I don't have children to raise anymore. While I could receive government assistance, I do not. I choose to work and trust the Lord for my needs.

So I get offended at all the remarks at how min wage jobs are only for the high school kids or the lazy. There are thousands of min wage jobs that have nothing to do with fast food!

End of rant. Shoo, I feel better now!

    Amy.

When I worked in retail I made $10 an hour and thats not min wage. The job was challenging as I did lots of different things for a low pay while working at OfficeMax. What I feel sad for are those whom have lots of student loans and end up in such a vocation. Bankruptcy is their only option and I know you would agree. How can someone with massive debts even make a payment on $7 an hour? I feel sad for those in such a situation. I myself am in a bad situation as well but have not filed yet and do not plan too as I plan to fight the debts until I have no choice.

I know what you are talking about. Pull into a rest stop on the Ct. toll road(I95) and go to the McDonalds and see if they speak english or into the c store and see if they can speak english to where you can understand them, you can even try the NJ TurnPike, same deal, who can speak english.

Thanks for the education. When I was in the service, I worked at a menswear store and we were paid on commission, no base pay, just commission. I don't think I would have enjoyed how you are paid, or less the commission is good.

Here's where you are wrong. While I don't agree with a $15 minimum wage or starting wage for them, many of these jobs are out of necessity. Have you seen the real unemployment numbers? I'm not talking about the numbers the government released. There are just not enough jobs to meet the needs, and if amnesty is ever approved, these jobs will be premium finds. We need to drop the mentality these are only kids looking for cash. It's survival for many.

Depends on the market WebDog. In Shasta Lake City, CA I would agree with as thats a depressed market. In Redding, CA, and many parts in Oregon I agree with you. However in Denver, CO, and many other places there are lots of other options. For example I went to the job fair 2 days ago and they had ENTRY LEVEL jobs for tax reps. One could get a better career if they had the ambition in such markets generally speaking.

I laughed when one worker asked one of the higher-ups to come and work his job for a week and see if he can live on it. Of course he can't. He went to school, educated himself, worked hard and now has a higher standard of living because....he worked for it. You don't make $80,000 "just because". It's like a friend of mine telling me how lucky we were to have our own house when she lived in her in-law's basement. I told her luck had nothing to do with it but hard work, education and learning a skill did. Her husband didn't work nor did she. They lived on welfare.
