The people who defame Israel and wish to undermine its status in the world are not anti-Semites — or so they will tell you, every chance they get. Their denial of anti-Semitism is essential to their moral position. In their own view they are good progressives, therefore absolutely innocent of racial or religious discrimination. Their propaganda campaign, which they hope eventually will escalate into economic warfare, is intended merely to reshape Israel’s policies.
Robyn Urback: Scarlett Johansson won’t be bullied by activists for Israeli boycott. Good for her

At a time when a prominent former NBA star is posing for photo ops in North Korea and a Canadian rock star is boorishly comparing Fort McMurray to Hiroshima, it’s refreshing to see a celebrity embracing a more nuanced and carefully considered position on international affairs.

Actress Scarlett Johansson has decided to end her eight-year relationship with the humanitarian group Oxfam International over what her spokesperson called “a fundamental difference of opinion.” The 29-year-old actress, who has been criticized for her partnership with SodaStream, an Israeli company making home-carbonation machines and operating a factory in the West Bank, cited Oxfam’s position on the “boycott, divestment and sanctions movement” as the reason for her decision to sever ties.

What they oppose, they want to assure us, is Israel’s position in the West Bank. Their increasingly loud and self-confident BDS movement (Boycott, Divest, Sanction) is not, as they tell it, a struggle against the Jews. They simply want to bring Israel into line with enlightened leftist opinion in Europe, the U.S. and Canada.

Is a person who criticizes the Israeli government, even once, automatically anti-Semitic?

If the answer is no, then how many times does it take before a person is anti-Semitic?

False anti-Semitism charges blind us to real bigotry

    February 9, 2014

"After members of the American Studies Association courageously and overwhelmingly voted to support a resolution calling for a boycott of Israeli academic institutions in recognition of the human-rights violations of Palestinian students, critics falsely leveled the charge of anti-Semitism. They claimed the measure violated academic freedom; yet they largely ignored the rampant Israeli violations of Palestinian professors, teachers, and students that led to the boycott. Additionally, critics claimed the measure unfairly targeted Israel over other countries and wrongly attacked the (supposed) democracy of Israel.

Yet Jewish Voice for Peace, a group with 35 chapters and a rabbinical council, supported the ASA for "hold[ing] Israeli institutions accountable for their participation in human-rights violations, bringing into sharp focus Israeli policies that severely limit the academic freedom of Palestinians within the occupied Palestinian territory and inside Israel. The resolution specifies that it does not prohibit collaboration on research and publications between individual scholars; nor does it prohibit Israeli scholars from attending international conferences."

"..."No discussion of how the Lobby operates," they wrote, "would be complete without examining one of its most powerful weapons: the charge of anti-Semitism In fact, anyone who says that there is an Israel Lobby runs the risk of being charged with anti-Semitism, even though the Israeli media themselves refer to America's 'Jewish Lobby.'"..."

Rather like folk who call anyone liberal who disagrees with them on anything.

The term anti-Semitic is a hot button term.

Have you any idea of how un-American and communist at it's very core this thread of yours is?

Do you have any idea what entity it is that relentlessly is pushing for hate speech laws?

I suppose when this finally does become nation wide you'll be all for it, eh?:

You put on these big airs like you're all American conservative Republican, what a bunch of hooey.

    The 'first' hate speech laws....

“As an expression of its radically anti-nationalist character, the fledgling Soviet government issued a decree a few months after taking power that made anti-Semitism a crime in Russia. The new Communist regime thus became the first in the world to severely punish all expressions of anti-Jewish sentiment.17 Soviet officials apparently regarded such measures as indispensable. Based on careful observation during a lengthy stay in Russia, American-Jewish scholar Frank Golder reported in 1925 that "because so many of the Soviet leaders are Jews anti-Semitism is gaining [in Russia], particularly in the army [and] among the old and new intelligentsia who are being crowded for positions by the sons of Israel."18”

My personal opinion of it agrees with this:

    What is a Semite?
    Sem·ite /ˈsemīt/ noun

    noun: Semite; plural noun: Semites

    1. a member of any of the peoples who speak or spoke a Semitic language, including in particular the Jews and Arabs.

If Revmitchell and others of his ilk want to make it to mean only Jews, then they need to refine it to anti-Jew in lieu of anti-Semitism. Revmitchell and his ilk are quick to lower the accusation of anti-Semtism on others, while at the same time they couldn't care less what happens to Palestinians who are also Semites, so that technically makes them to be anti-Semites themselves.

This thread is tending towards cirricular reasoning. So, I'm closing it.
