In a recent conversation with Glenn Beck Dr. Ben Carson said that when we have conversations about gun ownership we need to begin that discussion from the point of discussing what we are afraid of. (My paraphrase)
I think that is a good point to start from on gun ownership and the second amendment. In fact if we do not start from that point then we end up only talking past one another.
So what do you believe that each side of the debate on the second amendment are afraid of?
What are we afraid of with regards to keeping the second amendment in place and unfettered?
What are we afraid of with regards to imposing on the second amendment regulations or doing away with it altogether?
