I would refuse to serve anyone like this idiot if I knew they were coming in to do that.

You probably have the label wrong. It should be Southern Baptist.

What percent tip do you leave?

    25 - 30%. Doesn't everyone?

madre and I, usually with the grandson in tow, visit four or five restaurants on a regular basis. We are what you would call regulars. We know our waitstaff by name and they know ours. We were doing friendship evangelism before it was a method. How we conduct ourselves in public places says a lot about our practice of faith.

They have a tough job and I feel that Christians have no place making it tougher. Restaurants are a ripe field for evangelism. We have never made a practice of announcing that I was a pastor nor even indicated we were Christians. It does not take long before we're found out. No tracts, no confrontational evangelism methods; just treating hard working folks with dignity and respect. Over the years, we've grown close to many. Not only do they work hard, many are struggling to make ends meet or have significant personal issues. I know of several that have come to the Lord, in part, due to our testimony and a willingness to speak and listen to them.

In one case, we were at one of our favorite places and as we were getting ready to leave our waitress informed us that the owners picked up our tab. We had already budgeted the cost and gave that amount as our tip. Call it providence or coincidence but the amount of the bill was just a few dollars more than the waitress needed to pay the balance of her rent.

That letter in the OP is incredibly stupid regardless of who wrote it. The writer certainly has a right to his or her own opinion on waitstaff pay but shouldn't punish the very people for whom he attempts to advocate.

    Amen brother.

God works in mysterious and wonderful ways. God knew what the waitress needed. Good for you being the person who helped.

I tip 20% sometimes more, never less.

It was the testimony of a couple like Padre's while I was a waitress and atheist that led to me towards having my own testimony now.
The ones who left one dollar bills in tracts were the ones who helped fuel the fire of my scorn of Christianity. Thankfully, that one couple kept coming in and got me on the path toward thinking and reconsidering the possibilities.

Yet another example of a liberal thinking they have good intentions implementing a policy with no regards as to whether or not it is effective or workable.

Why doesn't this idiot tip the cook and the hostess as well?

That's going to wreck my head if I ever move back. Here restaurants pay a decent wage so tipping is usually a few coins (edited from conks, but that was funny) at the till.

Silly people in America most servers make quite a bit of money via tips.

Recently we hosted a ladies tea at a local Restuarant. The server they assigned to our room took care of about 50 ladies.

She was brilliant, but there was absolutely no way to tip. We asked her and the manager but there was no way to do it.

We thought that was a little over the top! My wife quietly slipped her a few euro and she was thankful but a little embarrassed.

It's funny how different cultures adapt to the situations.

If you are here and happen to tip it all goes into a pot to be divided up.

I suspect it us part of the socialism of the society.

I guess at the end of the day it is neither good nor bad - just different.

I used to get tips in my job. A very rich woman who knew Michael Moore told me that she did not like to tip in restaurants. She never tipped me either although she demanded a lot of extra service all the time. A few times she did give me some newspapers that she had already read. She said that she was not a Christian. She was very brilliant and went to the Riviera every year.

The reason that the rich do not tip is that they do not care if you like them or not.

Even if the service is terrible?

At Walt Disney World - on the tables at the restaurants - there is a short notice explaining tipping customs -
as - you say C4K - there is generally no tipping in Europe ( other than rounding up to the next Euro)

    Brief pet peeve diversion :)

The word euro, in referring to the currency, is not capitalised any more than dollar or yen.

Okay - back to the thread :)
