During a Winter Garden city commission meeting, the pledge of allegiance was about to start when the Mayor noticed something disturbing.

A man who was filming the meeting decided he did not want to stand for the pledge.

The mayor asked very politely out of respect if he could stand, but did not make the request he had to say the pledge. The man still refused.

That’s when the Mayor was fed up and had the police officer remove him from the room while they say the pledge.

Maybe he really did not have to, but that is exactly what is wrong with this country nowadays.
Total lack of respect for what is considered proper decorum, just because he didn't have to, and want to.
May this Mayor's tribe increase.

Might there have been a reason the man didn't stand? I was in a court room a couple years ago when the judge walked in and the bailiff said, "All rise, court is now in session." One man didn't stand up, but he did respectfully remain quiet and attentive.

The judge started yelling at him and threatened to hold him in contempt of court if he didn't stand up IMMEDIATELY.

The man very slowly pushed himself out of his seat and leaned heavily on the railing in front of him. He then stepped out into the aisle and pulled both pant legs up revealing two artificial legs.

The judge got up and walked out of the court room and the bailiff announced that court was adjourned for the day.

Sometimes there is more in play than we know.

There is something called common courtesy and respect.

Made me think of my graduation from NCO academy. During the practice, we came to the part that the Chaplain would give the invocation, the Sgt Major said that we are not required to bow our heads in prayer, however - if we chose not to, we were to inspect our shoes during the prayer.

Lack of respect is a major problem in these United States.

Well, if everyone acted this way, ie demanded he do his own thing - what if someone wanted to sing the pledge, what if someone wanted to recite it in Spanish, what if someone wanted to yell so only he is heard? Welcome to Mob rule.

This isn't about people disrupting something. This is about someone not standing up. This person wasn't being disruptive, they weren't trying to take over, or only make themselves heard. Now the example that TCassidy is a different story. In fact, I give double thumbs up to that man who did stand, even though it was extremely difficult for him to do so.

The individual indicated in the OP, should be THANKFUL he has two legs to stand up.

This is another problem we have in this country, instead of complaining so much, we should be thankful for what we have.

As sign of respect I came to the position of attention - and gave the military hand salute. A moment later, I could tell someone was walking down the aisle. I slightly re-positioned myself, so she could NOT get passed me - until the Anthem was completed. MATT, had you been that person walking, would you have tried to get pass me?

But if I had been walking down the aisle and someone purposefully got in my way, I would first ask them politely to let me by, then I would escalate to a firmer request, and then I would force myself past the person blocking my way. See what just happened? You decided to force your version of respect on me, and now we have a scene that caused a much larger disruption than me walking down an aisle.

Yes, I have the freedom to not stand if I wish to not stand. It doesn't matter what the majority is doing. If the majority of people stood up in respect to Allah, would you do it because the majority did it?

First, my child wouldn't attend a school that had stupid rules like addressing teachers as ma'am or sir. Second, if they did, they would follow the rules of the school. The OP isn't about following rules, it's about people getting their feelings hurt because someone didn't show the level of "respect" they thought he should.

Actually it's one of the more intelligent responses on this thread so far. That IS the problem. People are willing to sacrifice freedom all in the name of doing what is commonly accepted or expected. It's really pretty sad.

I would have been upset that someone did not respect the flag. On the other hand, I am upset that someone was thrown out for not respecting the flag. I guess I'm just getting crotchety in my old 30 years!

Not to be cliche' (of course, I say that as I am about to say one of the most cliche' things I've ever said), I would have been upset that someone disrespected the flag, but I would fight and die for his right to do so.

The way I personally would have handled it (not being mayor, just being a bystander) would have been to note that person, and try to catch up with them afterwards and explain to them that they are showing not only disrespect to the flag, but disrespect to the men and women who have fought for it. It's not about the flag. It's what it represents.

"I pledge allegiance to the flag. And to the republic for which it stands." And then it goes on to describe the republic for which that flag stands. "One nation under God, indivisble, with liberty and justice for all." When you disrespect the flag, you are disrespecting the nation, and the freedom that is associated with it. You are disrespecting the liberty that flag stands for. By exercising your right to show disrespect, you are disrespecting that right.

If he still decided to show disrespect, I'd shake the dust off my boots, call him an idiot under my breath, and walk away.

They love the public expression of liberty more than the actual liberty. They are willing to stand, and even recite a pledge, which costs them nothing, but when it comes time to put "our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor" on the line, suddenly they are nowhere to be found.

Agree with you 100%. But everyone would have been better off if the discourteous slug was just ignored.
