White House warns Senate anew on Iran legislation

WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House delivered a fresh warning to the Senate late Saturday to stay out of negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program, asserting that pending legislation would likely have a “profoundly negative impact” on the ongoing talks.

President Barack Obama’s chief of staff, Denis McDonough, told Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker in a letter that legislation sponsored by the Tennessee Republican would go far beyond ensuring a role for Congress in any deal with Iran.

“Instead, the legislation would potentially prevent any deal from succeeding by suggesting that Congress must vote to ‘approve’ any deal,” McDonough said. He criticized a provision that would eliminate Obama’s authority to lift some sanctions on Iran as part of any agreement.

The talks are to resume Sunday in Switzerland, with the U.S. and other world powers facing an end-of-March deadline to reach a framework deal.

“The administration’s request to Congress is simple: Let us complete the negotiations before the Congress acts on legislation,” McDonough said, adding that he does expect a robust congressional debate if a final deal is struck by the end of June.

McDonough reiterated Obama’s repeated threats to veto the legislation should Congress pass it.

None of this would be happening if Obama had not decided he is a king instead of an elected official.

"...“The administration’s request to Congress is simple: Let us complete the negotiations before the Congress acts on legislation,”..."

Can you explain to me what's wrong with the administration's request? Why can't congress 'butt out' and allow negotiations to be completed?

He's not doing anything that other Presidents didn't also do. The GOP is just mad because he is using his given power to bypass what they thought was their ability to lameduck him.

It's hilarious.

The 47 continue to be an embarrassment to the country.

And they are 100% incorrect about an agreement being undone by another President which definitely won't be from the GOP any time soon.

The potential agreement is being negotiated by the UN Permanent Security Council Members + Germany.

Any President who tries to undo it with the stroke of a pen will have an international catastrophe on his hands if he hasn't gotten the okay of the other 5 countries who are in the potential agreement.

And as much as a GOP run Congress would want to override a veto against their legislation to undo or change the US terms of such an agreement, they could only do so with a two-thirds vote of Congress.

Somewhere in this, one can't help but wonder if this all goes back to a bunch of old white guys being upset that they can't control what that black guy in the White House does.

It goes against what the influenced GOP feels he should be doing.

Why can't congress 'butt out' and allow negotiations to be completed?

Money and pride.

He has made it clear that will not consult the Senate, as required by law, either after or before completing his "negotiations".

He knows once it is done, it is hard to undo, even if his actions are totally illegal.

His illegal amnesty program is the latest example. His rewriting legislation on Obamacare in the oval office is another.

King Obama wants what he wants and doesn't want anyone to stand in his way.

He is not the first to violate the War Powers Act. Bill Clinton was.

Far as I know, the rest are accurate.

Several people may be behind some of. At the head of the list is Valerie Jarrett.
