According to the Brown University Health Promotion website, energy drinks need to be taken extremely carefully as they can cause very harmful short and long term effects. The composition of these drinks can supposedly boost the heart rate and blood pressure, dehydrate the body and are even more dangerous when combined with alcohol. Their high consumption for a long term can cause major issues such as neurological problems and have even caused an increase in visits to the emergency unit as a report from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration confirms.

I have never drank an energy drink. I was traveling some years ago and stopped at a gas station. Being thirsty I went inside and selected an energy drink. After reading the ingredients I said to myself, "This is not something a human should drink". I replaced it in the cooler and bought a bottle or orange juice.

I am not surprised at this report.

I think the operative word as it is with any product that enhances metabolism, energy, libido, clarity of thinking, etc., is "moderation." Another key word is "common sense." Most folks (except children and idiots), who drink energy drinks, excessively, are well aware of the risks and choose drink them anyway.

Me either. The smell of taurine and the rest of the ingredients was enough to make me say nope to ever tasting one years ago.

I have a case of Red Bull in my office fridge and will drink them occasionally (maybe a couple of times a month) when I need a pick up in the middle of the day or between office and evening activities.

Moderation, like in all things, is helpful.

While I was working on my PhD caffeine became a necessity of my life. It was difficult to step down my intake afterwards but I did it. If someone uses common sense they shouldn't have problems. Of course, its always someone else's fault for some folks. You can put giant red labels on things warning of danger but some idiots will never pay attention. It happens.

I don't know why a report is needed to point out drinks that supply 1000% of your daily caffeine intake in one can are dangerous.

Taking a walk is much healthier and energy filling than an energy drink.

You don't always have the time for a brisk constitutional around the block when driving.

Energy drinks serve as an aid when needed and should be used in moderation...just like with a plethora of other things.

Not necessarily an energy drink per se, but I'm excited about the recent announcement that Surge is back.

I certainly didn't need this university report or any other report, to tell me of the dangers of these drinks! However, I thank you for posting this.

Let me ask, if energy drinks are bad for the body, what about alcohol, cigarettes, pot, etc.?

I'd love to know what you think CTB? I really would! :flower:

I drink the occasional "Monster". About 1-2 per week.

While in Iraq, when we did daily route clearance operations, we ALL had one Monster during mission brief/prep, one or two on mission, and then one winding down from mission back at the COB. So, 3-4 per day for about 5 months for me.

To me there is no doubt that cigarettes or tobacco in any form is bad for the body. I do not believe smoking pot just for fun is good for the body. There is some indication that there are medical uses where pot helps. But that does not mean it helps the whole body. After all chemo may kill cancer, but it is not good for the body as a whole.

I do not smoke tobacco or pot. I do not chew or dip snuff ... both filthy habits in my opinion and not a healthy thing to do.

I do not drink any alcohol. Never have. Never will. I just do not like the taste of alcohol.

Paul told Timothy to take a little wine in Timothy 5:23 Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses. I wonder what his illnesses were.
