    Great post!!

I just wonder how much air time that storied like this will get on the national TV networks daily news broadcasts compared to the few "bad cop" stories they almost daily telecast?

Yes, there are "bad cops" out there, and they need to be brought to justice, but OTOH I'd venture to say that for every "bad cop" they always seem to emphasize, there's hundreds more "good cops" out there who'll do things for people in their area that probably very few people will ever hear about.

Why? Well I asked a local TV news anchorman about why their coverage seems to be slanted toward the couple of bad apples while little or nothing is aired about the good apples down in their neighborhood precincts.

    His reply?

"Well, people just like seeing about the bad cops more. And the higher the numbers of viewers our station gets, the more ads we can sell to prospective businesses!"

If I was a taxpayer in that county I'd be upset that this cop is wasting my tax dollars. If he wants to do that on his own time, go for it.

As a husband, the guy better get off my lawn and leave it to me.

Matt - He can be hanging out at Dunkin Donuts or mowing a lawn - what's the difference?

What makes me sad is that there are no neighbors who are stepping in to help. Watching out for our neighbors should be a priority for us!

So, as a Christian who's supposed to help people do things that they can't do for themselves, such as this mother who's struggling to mow her yard while holding on to her baby, you'd consider what this deputy sheriff did for her as "wasting my tax dollars."

As one who knows that all law enforcement officers who are on duty also carry small hand-held police radios in their pockets when they leave their patrol cars for any reason, this deputy is only a hand's reach away from communicating with his dispatcher if he needs to respond to an emergency, I see what he did is merely part of his oath to protect AND SERVE his community.

I guess your interpretation of serving is different than mine.

And also, how are you certain that her husband is anywhere near his home, his wife and child. My own brother spent over 30 years as a coordinator for fund raising for the American Heart Association--a job that required him to be at places hundreds of miles away from home, often for weeks at a time.

IOW, it was nearly impossible for him to maintain his yard so that his neighborhood HOA wouldn't fine him several dollars to maintain his yard to their standards. His wife, my SIL, had a bone disease that made it impossible for her to use their lawnmower. Fortunately one of his neighbors was, in fact, a policeman for that town's police department. Guess what he did? Yep, the very same thing the deputy sheriff in the OP did--mowed my brother's big yard. When my SIL pulled out her purse to pay him for mowing the yard, he refused and told her, "Keep your money. That's what we policemen do for the people in this town of ours....we protect AND SERVE!"

There are some things that, to me, you just can't put a price tag on. One of these is, what Jesus Himself said: "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself"--- Matthew 22:39b.

IMHO that's exactly what the deputy sheriff in the OP, and what my brother's policeman did for him and my invalid SIL.

Sorry you feel this way about this.

    Excellent post!!!

Sheesh!!!! Some people would complain if it was raining half-dollars - because they could gather more if it were $20 bills!

This is a much better tax expenditure than the hand-outs to the "too lazy to work" crowd!

I get it...you guys are ok with public servents wasting our money when it fits your story.

You talk charity via the church and not the government until it fits your narrative.

I get it. You're simply inconsistent and it's fun to demonize me as uncaring and hateful simply because I'm consistent in my belief that we need to stop wasting money in government.

Hand outs are evil until it's a fluff piece that suits you. I get it, I really do.

Interesting. How is a public servant serving the community wasting our money? Now if this cop was ordered to do this, I'd say it's a misuse of power but for him to do it of his own free will? What difference is this than the cop who went out and bought shoes for a homeless man, delivering them when he was on duty (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtCWOkadGTY)? Or a cop that chooses to play ball with children for a time (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSKup1qFiGo). Or finally the cop who went out and purchased food for a woman who was caught shoplifting - and then gave her a ride home? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebqSMvah698). Yep - wasting our money in government.

I agree. All wasted money. Would it be ok for a cop to "serve" by cutting the lawn of a mosque?
