Report: Netanyahu to lead effort in thwarting Obama bid for UN chief

According to the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Jarida, Netanyahu will make common cause with moderate Arab governments in order to sabotage Obama’s plan to succeed Ban Ki-moon when the South Korean diplomat ends his term as United Nations secretary-general on December 31 of this year.

Al-Jarida quoted sources as saying that Obama has already discussed the issue of running for secretary-general with Democrats, Republicans, and Jewish officials in the US.

The sources said that once Netanyahu got wind of Obama’s plans, the prime minister began to make efforts to submarine what he has referred to as “the Obama project.”

“Wasn’t eight years of having Obama in office enough?” Netanyahu is quoted in the Kuwaiti daily as telling associates. “Eight years during which he ignored Israel? And now he wants to be in a position that is liable to cause us hardships in the international arena.”

The newspaper cited the widely acknowledged fact that personal ties between Netanyahu and Obama are frayed.

“Obama is the worst president Israel has had to deal with and the worst president for the Middle East and its allies, the moderate Arab states,” a Netanyahu aide is quoted as saying.

Amazing what nonsense you can find online. No representative of a Great Power has ever been secretary general, and none will be. Not to mention that the permanent members of the Security Council can veto a recommendation.

Interesting piece. President Obama seems like the leader who will move on to the next thing, but I'm not sure the UN is where he'll end up. He probably would love to be in the UN, but his administration has been a foreign policy disaster. Maybe his greatest disqualifier is that ridiculous Nobel Peace Prize...and then placing the US in 8 armed conflicts.

Curious to hear what others think on this. At this point, even the President's greatest admirers seem forced to admit his presidency has been lackluster at best. I don't know many who are saying the legacy he's leaving will meet the expectations he had going in. While I am reticent to say the President has been an abject failure, it would take a historical revisionist with gymnastic flexibility to correct his record and make him out to be anything but a middle of the road President.

Why not? Say it loud and clear. Obama has been an abject failure as President of the United States of America. He has trashed the Constitution. He has trashed the economy. He has trashed US foreign policy. He's a hypocrite and acts sanctimonious when he is in fact the instigator of many wrongful acts. He and Holder (and to a slightly lsser extent Lynch) joined hands in dividing the country and disrespecting police. I could go on and on.

He cannot possibly be considered a "middle of the road President." Presidents 8-15, 17-25,28,29,31,36 and 38 were classically middle of the road.Rutherford B. Hayes, our 19th Presisident, was as lackluster as they come. But he didn't make it his ambition to dismantle America from stem to stern.

Obama has not been a do-nothin' President. No, he has been pro-active in destroying every vestige of American values in his 7 plus years. He has certainly not been a failure in carrying out the most systemic deconstruction of America in history. He has been successful in that respect. But pardon me if I do not doff my hat to him.

His legacy will be shameful. His crowning "achievement" --Obamacare, speaks for itself.

As folks, even liberals on the street, what Obama has achieved. They will be speechless, unless one offers a lame "Global Warming initiatives." Yeah, that's gone over like a lead balloon.

This idea is so far fetched that anyone with any understanding of the UN, the makeup of the permanent members of the Security Council and politics in general would know this is simply a propaganda piece. There is absolutely no way the leader of any major power would ever be elected as the secretary-general of the UN.
