GOP frontrunner Donald Trump explains how he plans to force Mexico to pay for his proposed border wall in a two-page memoto The Washington Post.
“In the memo, Trump said he would threaten to change a rule under the USA Patriot Act antiterrorism law to cut off a portion of the funds sent to Mexico through money transfers, commonly known as remittances,” the Post reports. “The threat would be withdrawn if Mexico made ‘a one-time payment of $5-10 billion’ to pay for the border wall, he wrote.”

“It’s an easy decision for Mexico,” Trump states in the memo.

Ah, I see. The use of executive orders to make policy. "I have a phone and a pen."

So I guess he doesn't care about all those American companies who make money off those remittances and who employ thousands of American citizens?

Guess Trump has never heard of wiring rerouting. His plan would never work, too easy to get around. Dumb politics as usual for him.

In this way Trump is like leftists the world over. They think good intentions supersede actual results. So if he says he wants to build a wall, even if it is an unworkable plan and will fail, at least he had good intentions. He wants to deport all illegal immigrants. It will never be workable, but he intends to do it. He wants to create a database of Muslims inside the U.S. Won't ever be workable, but he has good intentions.

You give him more credit than I. I doubt he has good intentions. I bet he knows all his "plans" are unworkable, but after all a politician says what he thinks voters who like him want to hear. Rolleyes

Why does he think direct formal electronic forms of remittances are the only means of sending funds south of the Rio Bravo? I can think of at least two alternatives. and with the money involved others will come up with more.

Read in today's WSJ how Mr. Trump plans on collecting the money. Talk about an authoritarian\totalitarian system. It's based on have the proper identity papers. He wants the US to look like Russia\Former Soviet Union.

So do you favor another government regulation, this one directly impacting the flow of money among people?

I favor not having US money going to a country that is nothing but a leach and does absolutely nothing to create its own industry but instead sends its people to other countries where they take the place of American workers and then send that money back to their home country. It needs to end.

I will take my response one step further. Anyone who supports that but cries about jobs leaving the country due to heavy taxes and regulations is a hypocrite.

I tend to be very uncomfortable with the idea of requiring Americans to have what amounts to internal passports. To me, internal passports are the hallmark of totalitarian regimes (e.g. USSR, PRC, WW2 Germany and its occupied countries, etc.)

So what do we do about getting rid of the need to have those papers for everything I mentioned.

For the most part, I view them as regrettable necessities. Just because they are so, it doesn't mean I like them or the situations that brought them about. My wife still has her internal passport from the Former Soviet Union. Like I wrote above, I can think of at least three ways (like any Baptist preacher) to get around Mr. Trump's proposal. One is a variation on the Islamic system of money transfers. Another is (for a fee) to walk the cash across the border. Yet another is to send the funds to a third country and then to Mexico. There's enough money flowing here for people to figure out how to circumvent it.

Try cashing a check anywhere, or getting a credit card, or driving without a license.

Run for office and outline your plan. Let's see how popular it would be.

I agree. All this "have paper" stuff sounds one step short of requiring folks to take a mark in order to do anything.

Increase border patrols, instead of telling them to let illegals go.
Penalize individuals and businesses that employ illegals.
If an illegal has managed to be here for a year without legal incident, give them a temporary visa and put them in the system for citizenship. I need to look up the typical timelines for obtaining citizenship.
If they refuse to comply with citizenship requirements, or they've had any legal incidents, immediately deport them.
If they're repeat offenders (been deported and returned), or commit a serious crime (such as murder), life in prison (they wanted to be here, taking advantage of the American system; so let's put them in an American system that will take care of them).

I'm open to discussion. My answers aren't perfect, and need tweaking.

"Show me your papers." Isn't this what the nazis used to say to suspected Jews?

As I said in the duplicate thread, Trump's plan requires racism at its best. How do you determine who needs to show their papers? By their skin color? The way their name sounds?

Are we seeing a parallel of 1930's Germany?
