    I have been following some of the discussions on the Baptist Board regarding certain aspects of what we commonly call "The Gospel." As I read some of the discussions I was reminded of this series of lectures by Dr. D. A. Carson of TEDS. It is long, but it is well worth your time to listen to his answer to the question "What Is The Gospel, And How Does It Work?"

    See my signature. The gospel sheds the light on Christ and His work, and speaks to us "while in the way", and makes our heart to burn within us and gives us the peace and joy that is our strength. It saves us every day IF we continue in it. The salvation of the gospel is a continual ongoing affair throughout the believer's life. It is NOT a 'one time event'.

    I'd recommend the entire series (I think there was 3...maybe 4...sessions).

    D.A. Carson got it right when he pointed to John 3:16 as the gospel. He was also right when he indicated the gospel includes the name of Jesus - all that He stands for - and not a small fraction of it.

    I disagree with his point that the water does not refer to our physical birth, the flesh giving birth to flesh.

    I disagree with his point being born anew is an earthly thing, because it occurs on earth. It is a heavenly thing because it is a spiritual birth wrought by God.

    I disagree with his point that our choosing to believe in Jesus is grounded in the transforming work of God - a veiled reference to "irresistible grace."

    I think he missed the key point of John 3:15, where believers will - in Him - have eternal life. The point of God transferring those of His choosing into Christ was left out of his gospel presentation.

    I agree with him that John uses "world" to refer to the corrupt value system of fallen mankind. But he did not mention John's number one usage, found in John 3:16, that world refers to fallen mankind.

    Yet you mock so called LS'ers, make a false dichotomy between disciple/believer, then falsely teach 'it saves us everyday IF we continue in it'? LOLZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ & WOW!

    I see I overlooked one of Carson's best points, his presentation of beholding the snake high and lifted up. Excellent! If you are fearful of being bitten to death by the old Serpent, you will be drawn to the divine remedy.

    The Gospel is basically the message of us being all sinners unable to save ourselves, and that only means to do that is thru the death/resurrection of Jesus Himself on our behalf!

    Lots of folks believe in automatic salvation, they believe (in their estimation) and they are saved. Not how scripture reads. It is God alone who decides whether to credit a person's "faith" or not as righteousness. Nothing automatic about it.

    Not close to what? The video conclusion? I answered the question posed in the subject title, which, more appropriately should be "A Sermon On John Chapter 3", instead of giving the definition of the gospel. You never stated that the video had to be watched before answering the question.

    Nah, bashing the bashers, giving them in return what they do.

    Something about these passages that you don't understand?:

    ......to present you holy and without blemish and unreproveable before him: if so be that ye continue in the faith, grounded and stedfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel which ye heard, Col 1:22,23

    Behold then the goodness and severity of God: toward them that fell, severity; but toward thee, God`s goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off. Ro 11:22

    Now I make known unto you brethren, the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye received, wherein also ye stand, by which also ye are saved, if ye hold fast the word which I preached unto you, except ye believed in vain. 1 Cor 15:1,2

    but Christ as a son, over his house; whose house are we, if we hold fast our boldness and the glorying of our hope firm unto the end...... for we are become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our confidence firm unto the end: Heb 3:6,14

    The salvation of the gospel is even dependent upon faithful shepherds continuing their duties:

    Take heed to thyself, and to thy teaching. Continue in these things; for in doing this thou shalt save both thyself and them that hear thee. 1 Tim 4:16

    Take heed unto yourselves, and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit hath made you bishops, to feed the church of the Lord which he purchased with his own blood. Acts 20:18

    I am at a disadvantage in that I could not get the video sound to work.

    So, here is the scriptural definition of "the gospel" (well Paul's definition of it):

    1 Corinthians 15:1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
    2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
    3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
    4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

    The promise of the forgiveness of sin and eternal life through faith in the death burial and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ on our behalf.

    How does it work - Again Paul's answer:

    Romans 10:15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

    By the preaching of the "sent".

    God is the very One though that grants to us saving faith, so why would he not always accept one whose faith has beem plaed into Jesus to get saved then?

    For the umpteenth time, making assertions without support from scripture is without merit. The fact that God does credit our faith as righteousness or not, Romans 4:4-5/24, demonstrates your assertion is bogus.
