Evenin'! Been lurking for awhile on here, especially down in the joke's sub-forum (that's some good stuff!). I'm a 22 year old Male who's born-again believer, and I call the Southern Appalachian Mountains my home. Got Saved from reading the Bible one day in a Secular College, and most of my "doctrine" comes from my interpretations when reading the Bible by myself for a year after I was born again. As such my "Theological" terms and Beliefs may be slightly different. In fact, I probably believe most of the same things you do, I just don't know the technical term for 'em. Ha!

Y'all look fairly nice so I figured I'd register and pop in to say hello! :Biggrin I suppose if I had to be classified somewhere I'd be an Independent Fundamental Baptist (although I'm going to a Free Will Baptist Church currently as it's the most solid Church in the area), but I get along with most born-again folk regardless of which Branch in Christ's Tree they've settled on.

I also enjoy Old Regular/Primitive/United/Regular Baptist hymns as well as their old singing style of lining out. In fact I just found a Sweet Songster on Amazon from the 1800s and ordered it. Going to have a local refurbish it hopefully.

Hmm, anything else important....let's see...I drive a 94 Chevy pickup, with a gun rack, and massive steel bumper. It's a v8 with nice, deep dual exhaust that sounds like a T-Rex doin' a matin' call with one of them Lions from over in Africa. I ain't too cultured, but I'm always respectful, so sorry in advance!

@InTheLight I think I'd lose in a race against most modern vehicles heheh, especially that Dodge, my truck is made for torque, and hauling weight and only has 200HP. I don't have much "pep" and acceleration unfortunately...but she's built like a rock!

    @kyredneck
And yes, I have heard of, and seen greasy beans! I didn't think I'd ever hear anyone mention those on here though LOL. I have not, however, had them yet. Usually they only make an appearance once or twice during a Church potluck, and at that point it's a choice between homemade pulled pork/fried chicken or greasy beans, and the pulled pork/fried chicken always wins for me ;).

I'm guessin' you're from up in Eastern Kentucky? I live about 2 hours Southeast of Harlan over in Ashe County, NC. Right by the VA/TN/NC border area, near a little town called West Jefferson. It's about 30/45 minutes North of Wilkesboro, which is rather active in the moonshine business. Popcorn Sutton lived about 2 hours Southwest of me if you know who he is. Not that I'm advocating his lifestyle by any means, but he is well known 'round these parts ;)

I don't have a hemi in there, just a V6. I responded to your post as a way to say "Hi" and keep the conversation going.

Welcome to the BB, BTGT.... :) It's good to have a fellow redneck on board!

Greasy beans are a 'new' phenomena in that they probably originated from a mutation either in W. NC or SE KY within the last 200 years or so. They were barely known outside of Southern Appalachia on account of the remoteness of the region and possessiveness of the clans that grew and selected from them (thus the term FAMILY HEIRLOOM). They're called 'greasy' on account of the pod's slick shiny appearance due to lacking the microscopic 'fuzz' on the pod's surface that other beans have. Besides rich flavor, their culinary distinction is that the pods remain tender while the beans inside are full and mature resulting in a high protein vegetable when prepared as snaps. They were an essential source of protein for the mountain people who preserved them as 'shuck beans', or 'leather britches', for winter consumption. I took a large pot of greasy shuck beans to the Lexington church potluck a few weeks ago at my youngest SIL's baptism and not a bean was left.

My roots are in SE KY, I live in E Central KY in the foothills now. You mentioned Harlan, I spent a summer there with my Dad working on a road construction job many years ago.

Well hey! I'm new here too. Im south a piece from you right at the NC/TN/GA mountain line. We just had some bad fires here right before the Gatlinburg fires.
I'm in NC about 5 miles from TN and GA lines.

Howdy! I know exactly where you are. I went to school at WCU in Cullowhee/Sylva. I've got friends all over there. Friends in Franklin, Sylva, Dillsboro, Waynesville, Webster. I heard the Nantahala got lit up pretty bad from those fires near Franklin that you mentioned.

My old mountain church up there was Victory Baptist, on the side of Cowee mountain, right off 441 between Franklin and Sylva, on the Sylva side. It'll be on your right after you climb the Franklin side of the mountain and head down the Sylva side.

I don't know if you know the band Mountain Faith from Sylva, but I know them 'ol boys too. Took a concealed carry class with the banjo picker. Also had a mandolin picker at that Church in my Sunday School class who now plays with Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver.

Hey yeah cool I know all these areas. Love it here.
I'm west of Murphy near Tn. Yeah I had friends at work that were evacuated, our area fared much better than Gatlinburg!
Mountain Faith - they are very good! I've not seen them in person. Another group from there that I have seen is Walking By Faith. I have a couple of their cd's. My favorite group is The Isaacs. Love them, have seen them at WCU and Franklin.

Yes I love ramps! Been on several ramp hunting trips in WV, even started a patch here by sowing the root ends from ramp cleaning. Favorite is to eat them as scallions.

    You grow greasy beans?
