Those tracts are only sharing the gospel when the gospel is communicated. My bible is nothing but a book unless it is read.

This is why I don’t like money tracts. The goal seems to be tricking people into taking them rather than effectively communicating the gospel. The gage of success is not the gospel shared but how many people actually took the tract. I relate this to pastors who manipulate people to come forward. It is not the act of taking a tract, nor the act of walking an aisle, that is important. It is the gospel communicated and the power of that Gospel that is important.

I could use tracts that simply explained the gospel message through Scripture as the one I was witnessing to could have something to take home. In the past, I’ve used Bibles. I don’t know what became of most of these, but I did take the time to explain the gospel.

I do know of one person with whom I had several conversations and left him with one of those bibles. I did not see him for a couple of years, but when I did he told me he was saved, that God reached him through those conversations. He had been an atheist, but the last time we spoke he was the youth minister at his church. I don’t think that this would have happened if I had just tossed him a Bible or a tract. I don’t think this would have happened if I just spoke passages to him. Maybe I think this way because that was how I was. When I was lost I needed someone to reach me with the gospel message, not just give me a tract and let me fin for myself. But maybe I’m just uncommonly thick headed and stubborn.

Do you know of any tracts that are just presentations of the gospel message (without the gimmicks or cartoons)? I may be interested in that.

There are places where the mere mention of Jesus is considered intolerant and is a crime in many.

Don't gang your hat on legal/illegal.

That being said, I don't like most tracts because they almost invariably peddle a false gospel. As In The Light said - do these 4 things and you'll have eternal life

This makes, what, 37 threads evangelist has started on tracts? More than that?

Haven't we gotten tired of the merry-go-round? Why do we continue to perpetuate these threads when they simply say the same thing every time?

What makes you say this? What does the gospel have to do with handbill laws? I can give the gospel to people without breaking handbill laws. It's easy. You sit down to a cup of coffee and talk to someone.

and as stated before - passing out tracts indiscriminately was NOT the only way Moody enveligzed.
In fact, I would suppose it was a minor part of this ministry.

Thank goodness only 1-2 people of the 50 or so I ran into yesterday denied the tracts as most took them. Most do not think like In The Light or Ann.

    Oh, John, John, John. smh

My post related directly to the OP. Have you, or have you not, started a LOT of threads talking about tracts?

    As for your opening post....
    Tips from DL Moody himself:
As for the second half of your opening post:
This a classic strawman fallacy. "Many are against tracts"? No one, in your myriad number of threads about tracts, has come out against tracts; they've come out against an improper use of tracts, and especially against using or emphasizing tracts in place of personal evangelism--which, by the way, Moody emphasized (personal evangelism and use of a bible over tracts).

And thus, your OP started with a flawed premise.

Now, seriously, consider: how many times have you started a thread about tracts? How many times has it always turned into the same set of messages that we're seeing now?

I'm not criticizing you, John; I'm commenting about the insanity of the rest of us.

I think it is in most of our natures just to take such things offered. I can't tell you how many Watchtower tracts I have accepted in passing.

Some of those tracts do look interesting (I still like the John Rice one). I really like Moody's advice to carry a Bible when possible. I wonder if there are copies of his tracts. It would be neat to see.

Have you not noticed or looked into the fact that there are lots of varieties of tracts? Some are more in depth for conversations and some are just meant to pass out and so they are short and simple. I am all for a conversation and prefer that but this is not always possible especially at the 16th st mall where so many are in a hurry to get somewhere.

So you assume that tracts are ineffective? Thats because you are against most uses of tracts, unless they are in depth tracts/booklets designed for conversations.

I took the liberty to rephrase your assumption into a question that I could answer.

    No and no.
