Army: Your new handgun will be a Sig Sauer

Half a decade into its search for a new handgun, the Army has chosen Sig Sauer's version of the Modular Handgun System, according to a Thursday announcement from the Army.

The new sidearm will replace the M9 Beretta, the Army's pistol of choice for more than 30 years.

As the owner of one of Sig Sauer's first modular pistols (P250c), I think they will be quite happy with it. My only complaint about my pistol is that Sig Sauer abandoned the P250 lineup for the next generation system in order to compete for this contract.

Of all my handguns my SIG is the best. And I also own a S&W M&P which was designed specifically for the Army the last time they were planning to replace the M9.

I've been eyeing a P229 for a couple of years now, but haven't quite pulled the trigger on that purchase. Life keeps getting in the way and my wife doesn't look kindly on buying guns when there are other pressing needs.

I don't see many used ones on the market that are in decent shape and a reasonable price.

My own opinion. I prefer hammer-fired pistols to striker-fired ones. But I am a bit old-schooled.

Still, the p320 is a nice gun, and I can see the modularity being a real plus.

With that said, at least they went polymer. If you're gonna have to lug something around, might as well make it light.

Are you sure it's polymer.. I read the frame is s/s. Yea and it's also 9 MM.

I may be wrong, but I think they're calling the serialized trigger housing a frame, and what we would call the frame on any other pistol they call a grip module.

I think that whoever thought of the interchangeable grip module is a genius. The M9 is just too big for many who have small hands. A good fit helps make a good pistol shot.

I've witnessed some women who just couldn't get their trigger finger onto the trigger on the M9. Saw one using her middle finger in conjunction with her trigger finger just to get enough purchase to fire.

I have smallish hands for a guy. Double-action was (still is) a stretch that forces me to adjust my grip slightly in order to set the sweet-spot of my finger pad on the trigger. Otherwise, I must use my finger tip.

Just go back to the 1911.

I will say one thing about the Beretta, it is reliable. I have almost 6000 rounds through my 92. Never had even one ftf or fte. The only time I had a problem was a few light primer strikes, which were the result of a reduced-power hammer spring (Wolf Kit). Went to a bit higher weight and has worked fine since.
