Trump expected to order temporary ban on refugees

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to sign executive orders starting on Wednesday that include a temporary ban on most refugees and a suspension of visas for citizens of Syria and six other Middle Eastern and African countries, say congressional aides and immigration experts briefed on the matter.

Trump, who tweeted that a "big day" was planned on national security on Wednesday, is expected to ban for several months the entry of refugees into the United States, except for religious minorities escaping persecution, until more aggressive vetting is in place.

Another order will block visas being issued to anyone from Syria, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen, said the aides and experts, who asked not to be identified.

In his tweet late on Tuesday, Trump said: "Big day planned on NATIONAL SECURITY tomorrow. Among many other things, we will build the wall!"

The border security measures probably include directing the construction of a border wall with Mexico and other actions to cut the number of illegal immigrants living in the United States.

What is he going to do about the translators who helped our Forces in Iraq and Afganistan who are awaiting entry? They've proved which side they are on. With the withdrawal, they are stuck in country with targets on their chests.

His concern is proper vetting. Since those men can be properly vetted I would imagine they could be brought in. One thing is for sure we cannot afford not to do this no matter what.

Rev, they've been vetted. But, the last administration (not surprisingly) dragged its feet in issuing the needed visas.

We have a history of leaving people behind and in harms way. Over 400 Vietnamese embassy workers were left behind when S. Vietnam fell. Yes, others were evacuated but not all.
-----------------------------------------------------

Some 400 evacuees were left behind at the Embassy including over 100 South Korean citizens.

Shortly after taking Saigon on April 30, North Vietnamese intelligence officers went to the embassy where they found numerous classified documents.[44] Very few of the documents were not shredded but those that were shredded and not burnt were put together and used these to track down South Vietnamese employees of the U.S. government including of the Central Intelligence Agency.

Who has been vetted?
From the reports I have heard in various places, including a recent "This American Life" podcast, these personnel have already been vetted, but a number of members of Congress - primarily Republican - don't want to approve their visas because of anti-immigrant sentiments among their constituents.

And I've been specific in my remarks, though perhaps a bit too terse. The translators present a known quantity and an unpaid debt.
I have not expressed a problem with them but to the general public from those regions its near impossible to vette them

They put their lives at risk working as translators. They will be in much greater danger if we do not help them and let them immigrate. Is that Christian?

Hameed Khalid Darweesh, had worked on behalf of the United States government in Iraq for 10 years had been detained at the airport on Friday night after arriving on separate flights.

According to the filing, Mr. Darweesh was granted a special immigrant visa on Jan. 20, the same day Mr. Trump was sworn in as president. Mr. Darweesh worked with the Americans in Iraq in a variety of jobs — as an interpreter, an engineer and a contractor.

He worked as an interpreter for the Army’s 101st Airborne Division in Baghdad and Mosul starting shortly after the invasion of Iraq on April 1, 2003. The filing said he had been directly targeted twice for his work with the United States military.

A husband and father of three, he arrived at Kennedy Airport with his family. Mr. Darweesh’s wife and children made it through passport control and customs, but agents of Customs and Border Protection detained him.

There are about 50 Muslim majority countries in the world and 1 Jewish State. According to our last administration that is just fine. Israel has elected officials that consist of Muslims, Arabs and Christians. Before anyone starts pointing fingers and making claims of unfair discrimination against Muslims name just one Muslim country with an elected Jew...
