Here they answer in English, but have no problem with Spanish.

I have been impressed in Europe how hotel clerks can switch from one language to another. I remember in Oslo a desk clerk who spoke Norwegian to one person, German to the next, Spanish to the next and English to me. We here in the states are slackers and arrogant about it when it comes to languages.

A friend who lives in Moscow, Russia says they are the same. His explanation is that the US is very large as it Russia and many people only hear their own language spoken and see no reason to learn another. I believe he has a point.

Oh please...what a stupid comment. Like I said, I live in the SW USA. There are VERY FEW people here who have NO ability to communicate in English. Don't know where you are but dang...you're falling for some baloney. The only people I ever knew who really never learned to speak English were the abuelitas y abuelos, o tias y tios who had come here later in life. Even they could communicate if needed w/o a translator, it's called "Spanglish".

Languages: If I call the Chinese place, a Chinese person will answer the phone. Do you have a problem with Chinese speaking people? What about Koreans? East Asians? Middle Easterners? Or do you just have fits over the brown people who speak Spanish? I get a half-dozen telemarketing calls a day from people who barely speak English but they're not Spanish.

Get over it. The US is a melting pot. There is no requirement for assimilation. Don't like it? Don't hang with the "foreigners". You know, just like us spics do.

Second what Saved said. The only people I've met that do not speak or try to learn English are elderly folk who come here late in life. Indeed, even most of them learn a bit of English. Most of those I've met are Chinese. I've learned some Chinese and can with words and signs communicate a bit. That was when I did when I was in China.

I met two Korean sisters in a train in China. They spoke Chinese and a bit of English. I spoke English and a bit of Chinese. We were able to have interesting conversations. They were in China learning Chinese so they could return at Christian missionaries. They said the Korean Christian church realizes they are not enough in number to save the world, but if they convert Chinese then China has enough people to potentially take Christ to the entire world.

Jedi, why don't you learn some Chinese and Spanish so you can talk with those folk, the elderly?

Actually I do. Part of my problem is a partial hearing loss (in both ears) So I have trouble as it is - and then accents, esp heavy accents - makes it very hard for me to understand what the individual is trying to say. Often, I have to have my wife "translate" for me.

There is, in fact, a requirement for assimilation. If you want to become a citizen then you have to meet specific requirements. Those requirements are assimilation.

    你的意思是新色还是旧色?

I can speak much better than I can read. I remember very few characters now.

Nope...just gotta pass the citizenship test. Can you pass it? There's no requirement for "assimilation" (sounds so Borg-like). You pass the test, they hand you a certificate, a US passport and a form to register to vote. Well, that's what they did at my aunt's swearing-in ceremony.

Ya know, I might be more inclined to take you all seriously if you'd stop being so ridiculous. Do you know what people go through to be granted US citizenship? Honestly, I have seen the most extreme baloney, so easily refuted if someone would turn Faux news off and open their eyes. SMH.

Yep. In order to become a US citizen you must:

Be at least 18 years old at the time of filing Form N-400, Application for Naturalization.

Be a permanent resident (have a “Green Card”) for at least 5 years.

Show that you have lived for at least 3 months in the state or USCIS district where you apply.

Demonstrate continuous residence in the United States for at least 5 years immediately preceding the date of filing Form N-400.

Be able to read, write, and speak basic English.

Have a basic understanding of U.S. history and government (civics).

Be a person of good moral character.

Demonstrate an attachment to the principles and ideals of the U.S. Constitution.

The bold parts are called "assimilation."

Oh, and, by the way, they don't just hand you a passport. In order to get a passport you must:

    Fill out form DS-11.

    Document Citizenship and Identification.

Provide a 2" by 2" color passport photo.

Pay $110 via cashiers check or postal money order.

All the characters I learned way back in the 90's were the simplified characters. I was going to China and that is what they use there.

My son-in-law's parents came here in 1949. The simplified character change over started in the late 1940s but was not completed until the 1960s. I am only familiar with the traditional characters.

But isnt the test only given in English - if so, then you must be able to read and write English (or would that be American)
