I try to ignore Trump's tweets, I really do. But here is one that he made yesterday, essentially calling for an cancellation of NBC's FCC license because of the content of their broadcast. He's calling for a curtailment of First Amendment rights. Pull their FCC license because he's not happy with what they are saying.

    Trump and NBC.JPG

Now, imagine it's three years ago and Obama had said this:

With all of the inaccurate stories coming out of Fox News, at what point is it appropriate to challenge their License?

You know that conservatives would be blowing gaskets, and rightly so. But I don't see a peep about Trump's comment here on BB.

So why doesn't Trump sue NBC?
Just like he sued the women who accused him of sexual assault? Oh, wait, he never did that...
Just like he sued the NY Times for running the story about two women that accused him? Oh wait, he never did that...
Just like he sued Ted Cruz over voter fraud in Iowa? Oh wait, he never did that...
Just like he sued the Washington Post for libel? Oh wait, he never did that...
Just like he sued the Hispanic Media Coalition? Oh wait, he never did that...
Just like he sued the NY Times for publishing a couple of pages of one of his tax returns? Oh wait, he never did that...

He's got a point. Many broadcasters have completely abrogated their responsibility to report the news accurately. That's in the public interest.

They are licensed in the first place because what they do is, or should be, in the public interest.

At least he's out in the open about it. Not like Obama using his justice department and the IRS to silence the political opposition. Whether or not they were telling the truth made no difference to him at all.

Yep, the FCC license holders have specific obligation. If one wants to avpid that obligation, they have print and internet.

The government grants the bandwidth to broadcast. The government not only gives NBC the bandwidth, they actively prevent anyone else from using the same bandwidth. They are not required to provide this service.

Just because Abraham Lincoln did something doesn't make it right.

The allegation was that certain reporters wrote a fraudulent proclamation claiming it was from the President of the United States and published it in the papers, distributing the false proclamation in a time of civil war. That's a lot more serious than simply printing stories critical of the President.

Actually, he threatened to jail the Chief Justice. It was one of his many mistakes.

He was charged for violating campaign finance laws, not for making "a movie."

No, he's pointing out that Trump makes a lot of claims, but does not seem to want to take them to a court of law where evidence would be examined.

And it would sure be nice if Trump started acting like a Christian. If he has truly met the Lord of all creation and decided to follow Him in obedient discipleship, one would think that it might actually have an effect on his life, his character, and the things he says, tweets, and does.

The people own the airwaves, but the FCC regulates the bands so that there is not chaos. They ARE required to provide space to those who abide by the appropriate policies and have secured the appropriate license. Criticizing the President does not violate policy... yet.

There is a difference between legitimate criticism and outright lies.

Sure, but those who are being criticized rarely consider it "legitimate." Outright lies can be prosecuted in court for a remedy.

If we censored lies from television broadcasts, the President would never be able to speak on television without heavy editing.

Seems like you were referring to a different case than I was. Lots of people make movies.

Apparently you were talking about Mark Basseley Youssef (the Egyptian-American film maker who made "Innocence of Muslims," which was originally blamed for the mission attack). He was sentenced to one year in federal prison for violating the terms of his probation from a 2010 bank fraud case. He was also ordered to serve four years of supervised release after his prison term.

So he was not jailed for making a movie, although he was "a dude who made a movie."

If we are going to jail movie makers, I would like to see Roman Polanski jailed for the rape of a minor, among other charges.
