Some folks may be stunned to learn that a Baptist church in North Carolina has invited a Muslim to preach from its pulpit this Sunday morning in Charlotte.

It turns out the guest preacher is stunned, too.

Imam Ronald Shaheed said it is surprising and ironic that he was invited to deliver the Dec. 3 sermon at Myers Park Baptist Church in Charlotte — on the first Sunday of Advent, no less.

What manner of Baptist is tolerant of this betrayal?

Christ will not be present in such an assembly gathered to be instructed by one who worships and embraces evil.

The church is affiliated with the Baptist Alliance and the Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists and in 2007 was expelled from the Baptist Convention of North Carolina for welcoming gays and lesbians.

According to its website, "For more than 70 years, we’ve built a reputation as a place where members are encouraged to ask questions, debate issues, and seek truth. Our doors are open to all who wish to follow Jesus on a journey of faith. As a result, today we are a vibrant ecumenical congregation, comprised of people from more than 20 different faith communities."

What's going on in North Carolina? Pastor J.D. Greear of Raleigh-Durham, who was nearly elected SBC President a year and a half ago, affirmed with Lifeway editor Trevin Wax in an interview for The Gospel Coalition that "Muslims do worship the same God as Christians."

Let's hope Greear and the leadership of the Baptist church in the OP repent for their capitulations, as seminary president Paige Patterson did several years ago:

During Patterson's report to the convention, a messenger requested a "straight-forward explanation" of the decision.

In response, Patterson apologized to the convention

Steve James, chairman of Southwestern's board of trustees, told messengers that trustees will discuss concerns about the Muslim student's admission at meetings in September and October. James requested prayer for Patterson and the seminary.
