Rob, most of my points about the quiz in this thread have been negative, and I've fleshed them out a bit more HERE. But -- thanks -- I do think the quiz is both interesting and useful. It should remind us of how often we can just read over words. We may assume that we know what they mean, whether or not we do. We need to remember that an important part of studying the Bible is studying its words to understand their meaning.
I don't know anything about that, but I find it interesting, if I remember correctly, that is was regarding this same word that Tyndale or Wycliffe "coined" the English word Passover in Exodus.

I "liked" Lexham Press on Facebook (I am a fan of the LEB), and they are the source of the quiz. Looks like it was marketing for a new book.

I'm not anti KJV (my pastor and my kids' school both use it), but maybe my favorite undergrad course, History of the English Language, makes me too eager to perceive changes. Too much time studying Grimm's Law or the Great Vowel Shift, I'm sure.

    Anyways, here's the video.

Though I been reading, studying and quoting the KJV for years, I took the quiz and embarrassed myself:oops:... Does that mean I'm going to go to another translation:Roflmao... Yeah like that's going to happen... TC acing the test?... Hello he's a preacher who grew up on it:Rolleyes... I just read study and learn and if I question a word and its meaning. I always have resources at my disposal to right my error... Since God was not giving the test I'm OK!... Brother Glen:D

But I also read those passages in Hebrew and Greek so I know what the original language actually says. :)

I'm not an expert on tests, but I'm pretty sure that's cheating.

Yeah, imagine that, the author of the quiz portraying his employer and publisher's own Bible translation (the 'Lexham English Bilble') as getting it right.
Apparently this guy is a Bob Jones grad and former employee of BJU Press?

Is it right, or is it portrayed as right? Make your case if it isn't, no red herrings needed. I'm not sure that I see the priests of Baal "pausing" around their altar as a viable translation, but I'm willing to hear arguments.

And I just don't see a LEB conspiracy in the works. A translation with no print edition and available for free, whose advertising even refers to it as a companion to your personal favorite translation? They're marketing the LEB as a study tool.

This is exactly why I use modern versions when witnessing, unless someone requests I use an older one. I don't wanna hafta take the time to interpret older English when MODERN English is readily available.

But don't take Van's path. He thinks he has the key the proper way of translating Scripture and is gladly dismissive of actual Bible scholars.

The use of multiple versions is the way to go --compare and evaluate.

Good fun! I got one wrong, but that was because I didn't know what showcase meant. I think it must be Americanese. It's not in my 1977 Oxford Concise Dictionary. That's my excuse, anyway. :)

My favourite KJV verse is Psalm 5:6. 'Thou shalt destroy them that speak leasing.' Quite right! Death to hire purchase salesmen!

Mark gives more detail in the book, and says he gets the definition from the big OED. He says that according to OED, the last time someone used it in the same sense as the KJV was John Milton in 1644 in Areopagitica, and that it means "to set of with advantage, or with added grace, lustre, etc.; to adorn or grace." The word "showcase" doesn't come from the OED, but he was trying to use that as the equivalent of the KJV meaning. No wonder we all missed it!

Interesting thing, the word I chose -- demonstrate -- has semantic overlap with the meaning of showcase. So I say I was not wrong! :Devilish

demonstrate (dictionary.com) 3. to manifest or exhibit; show
showcase (dictionary.com) 4. to exhibit or display

I think Mark overplayed his hand on that one.
