    Why the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is not for Today

    Understanding the Baptism with the Holy Spirit in Acts is difficult. But I found the keys are the Ethiopian Eunuch Acts 8:27 and the Samarians Acts 8:5. In essence, all had the Holy Spirit but only the Samarians had the Baptism with the Holy Spirit.

    These received the gift of the Holy Spirit according to Peter in Acts 2:28 just as we do today. But the Samarians also received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit through the apostle’s hands which the Eunuch did not.

    On Pentecost God baptized the 12 Apostles with the Holy Spirit who also spoke in tongues. According to Acts 2:38 the eunuch and the Samarians had the gift of the Holy Spirit through Philip’s preaching. But Philip could not provide the baptism of the Holy Spirit for either. Acts reveals that beyond the two outpourings, only the Apostles through the laying on of their hands could baptize people in the Holy Spirit. It was the proof of apostleship Hebrews 2:4.

    When the Apostles visited the Samarian converts, they laid their hands on them baptizing them in the Holy Spirit. But this was not the case with the Eunuch. It says he went on his way rejoicing after Philip baptized him in water.

    So the Samarians and the Eunuch received the gift of the Holy Spirit through Philip’s preaching. But only the Samarians received the baptism with the Holy Spirit through the Apostles’ hands.

    About 7 years later, God poured out the Holy Spirit on the gentiles at Cornelius’ house which resulted in their speaking in tongues just as the Apostles did at Pentecost.

    Scripture doesn’t mention the 3000 converts on the day of Pentecost as baptized with the Holy Spirit. Nor the 5,000 converts days later. But we might assume those whom the Apostles baptized in water also received the baptism with the Holy Spirit through their hands. But anyone baptized by someone other than an apostle would have been like the Eunuch who received only the gift of the Holy Spirit.

    Later, Paul preached to the disciples at Ephesus Acts 19:1. These like the Eunuch received the gift of the Holy Spirit. But they also received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit through the apostle’s hands the same way the Samarians did.

    The Baptism with the Holy Spirit provided God’s word through tongues and prophecy until the New Testament canon became complete. How do we know this? Paul says scripture thoroughly equips us 2 Timothy 3:17. Paul said tongues and prophecy provided only partial knowledge 1 Corinthians 13:9. So it makes sense scripture replaced them when completed.

    Beyond Acts, the Corinthians no doubt received the Baptism with the Holy Spirit through Paul’s hands. And Paul mentioned he wanted to visit the Romans to give spiritual gifts to them too Romans 1:11. Paul mentions laying his hands on Timothy who also received a gift 2 Timothy 1:6.

    So we can say scripture directly supports the Baptism of the Holy Spirit for those ministered to by an apostle. That it was not for all. The Baptism with the Holy Spirit passed into history with the rest of the apostles Hebrews 2:4 because only they provided it as a sign of their authority. And that scripture replaced the fragmentary gifts of tongues and prophecy with the completed revelation. And we can confidently say believers from Pentecost on have the gift of Holy Spirit according to Acts 2:38, but not the Baptism with the Holy Spirit. Just as the Eunuch and believers since then.

    The Baptism in the Holy Spirt has always been done at time of ones conversion, when the Holy Spirit placed that saint into the body of Christ. Still happens every day, just not a second act of grace to just those who speak in tongues!

    You are confusing the new birth with the baptism. They are not the same.

    The born from above is the same time the Baptism in/by the Holy Spirit happens to us!

    The OT saints were born again but did not have the baptism until Pentecost.

    [11] I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

    My understanding is without the baptism of the Holy Ghost/Spirit we are still in our sins. Jesus lives inside of those born again in the person of the Holy Ghost. Water baptism is a sign to the world that we’ve been baptized already from on high.

    John 16:7,13 KJV
    [7] Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. [13] Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

    I think it better for an individual who has not received the baptism of the Holy Spirit to be honest and admit it rather than to say, based on their not having that experience, that no one else can receive it either.

    All believers have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. In OT times the Spirit was with the born again, faith is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. But in Acts we see two distinct groups. All believers have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, but only those who were in the two outpourings, or those whom the Apostles laid hands on, had the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, speaking in tongues.

    ““As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” Matthew 3:11 (NASB95)

    You = 2nd person plural which pertained to John' immediate audience. And this happened as foretold.

    Seeking Christ
    Sorry my friend but your OP is not biblical. Here is why;

    Receiving God's Spirit is condional on believing and following God's Word. If we are not born of the Spirit we are still in our sins. When Christ was with his disciples God's Spirit was not in them it was with them. It was not until the death of Jesus that the outpouring of God's Spirit was given to the dsciples to be in them.

    JOHN 7:38-39
    [38], He that believes on me, as the scripture has said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
    [39], But this spoke he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.

    JOHN 16:13 [13], However, when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.

    Christ’s glorification and His ascension to heaven were necessary BEFORE the Holy Spirit could be given to His disciples. While He was alive as a human being, He told His disciples that He was WITH them, but He also said that there would come the time when He would be IN them. He referred, first, to His presence as a Man who was WITH them, but in the future, to the gift of His Holy Spirit which would dwell IN them (John 14:17). But in order for Christ to dwell IN His disciples (John 14:18; Galatians 2:20), through the Holy Spirit, He had to be first glorified with the glory which He had BEFORE He became a human being (John 17:5). As a mere human being, He could not live IN somebody else. That could only happen after He became again a glorified being.

    When a true disciple of Christ receives God’s Holy Spirit, it is the Spirit of the Father AND the Son which emanates from both glorified God beings, and which dwells in the disciple (John 14:23; Romans 8:11, 14-17; Romans 8:9, second part; Galatians 4:6; Philippians 1:19).

    ...........

    JOHN 3:3-8
    [3], Jesus answered and said to him, Truly, truly, I say to you, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
    [4], Nicodemus said to him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
    [5], Jesus answered, Truly, truly, I say to you, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
    [6], That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
    [7], Marvel not that I said to you, You must be born again.
    [8], The wind blows where it wants, and you hear the sound thereof, but can not tell from where it comes, and where it goes: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

    ACT 2:38 [38], Then Peter said to them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

    ROMANS 8:1-14
    [1], There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
    [2], For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
    [3], For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: [4], That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
    [5], For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
    [6], For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
    [7], Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
    [8], So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
    [9], But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
    [10], And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
    [11], But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwells in you.
    [12], Therefore, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
    [13], For if you live after the flesh, you shall die: but if you through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, you shall live.
    [14], For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

    ROMANS 2:29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

    1 CORINTHIANS 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

    1 CORINTHIANS 3:1, Know you not that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?

    2 CORINTHIANS 12:7-13,
    [7] But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man (context to believers) to profit with.
    [8], For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
    [9], To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
    [10], To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
    [11], But all these works that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
    [12], For as the body is one, and has many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.
    [13], For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

    2 CORINTHIANS 1:22 Who has also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.

    2 CORINTHIANS 3:3-6,
    [3] For as much as you are manifestly declared to be the letter of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.
    [4], And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward:
    [5], Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;
    [6], Who also has made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter kills, but the spirit gives life.

    GALATIANS 3:2-3 [2], This only would I learn of you, Received you the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?[3], Are you so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are you now made perfect by the flesh?

    GALATIANS 5:16 [16],16, This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

    GALATIANS 3:14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

    GALATIANS 4:6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

    GALATIANS 5:5 For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.

    GALATIANS 5: 18, But if you be led of the Spirit, you are not under the law.

    GALATIANS 5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

    EPHEISANS 1:13 In whom you also trusted, after that you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that you believed, you were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise.

    1 JOHN 4:13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.

    ...........

    I hope you can receive this correction in the spirit it was given (Love) and it may be a blessing to you. God's Spirit gives his gifts to all who need it as we believe and follow God's Word.

    God bless

    Here's how it works. Believers of all time were born again/circumcised in heart. Faith is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. David asked God not to take his Holy Spirit from him. The Spirit was with believers during that time. At Pentecost the Spirit was IN believers. But only the Apostles had the Baptism of the Holy Spirit with speaking in tongues and prophesying. And only those whom they laid their hands on had the Baptism with speaking in tongues and prophesying. But these could not baptize others in the Holy Spirit. It was part of being one of the 12 Apostles.

    The Baptism, speaking in tongues and prophesying ended with the Apostles but all believers still have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

    The challenge to you is in proving the Baptism, speaking in tongues and prophesying came in another way besides the two outpourings or through an Apostle's hands, using scripture only.

    I think many mistake the New Birth and the fullness of the Spirit that comes through holiness with the Baptism with the Holy Spirit.. They also confuse the prayer of faith that heals today with the Apostle's signs and wonders. But a study of the first century gifts clearly shows today's gifts are not first century gifts, but 20th century "knockoffs".

    Actually that is not how it works at all. Please read the post and the scriptures you are responding to. Did you read them? It does not seem that you read the post you are quoting from or the scriptures in them. If you did what do you think that post and the many scriptures in this post you are quoting from is saying? There is no challenge to me as I have already provided the scriptures proofs that disagree with your position in the OP. Your challenge is to prove otherwise as all you have posted is your words which are not God's. This is only posted in all love and respect and as a help to you. I hope you can receive it in the spirit it was given to you (love).

    I think you are confusing the new birth with the Baptism. The New birth is the basis of faith in believers of all time. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit was unique to the Apostles and those whom they laid their hands on, apart from the two outpourings. Here's the challenge; Prove the Baptism, speaking in tongues and prophesying came in another way besides the two outpourings or through an Apostle's hands, using scripture only.

    Not at all. I have explained my position and supplied many proof texts that disagree with you. In response you have only provided your own words that disagree with God's. Your reponse here only shows you did not read my earlier post and scriptures that were provided and sent in love as a help to you. Your challenge is to respond to the post and supporting scriptures you are quoting from. So far you haven't.

    As posted to you earlier;

    Receiving God's Spirit is conditional on believing and following God's Word. If we are not born of the Spirit we are still in our sins. God's Spirit chooses what gifts to give to all men (believers) according to their needs in sharing the gospel...

    Well all of this was posted earlier. I left many more scriptures out of this post. What do you think these scriptures means? They disagree with you. Do you believe God's Word? Ignoring God's Word does not make it dissappear.

    You need to provide one or two scriptures showing the Baptism with the Holy Spirit came in another way than through the two outpourings or through an apostle's hands. It's all I'm asking.

    Ok friend your just repeating yourself now. I see your not interested in a discussion and your not reading my posts or the scriptures provided in them or you would not be posting what you are writing. I see no point in continuing this conversation if your not interested in having a discussion.

    Your starting with a false premise trying to separate receiving God's Spirit in the new birth with spiritual gifts. As posted already in the posts you are not responding to, you are confused because;

    When Christ was alive with his disciples he was not IN them but WITH them. Christ’s glorification and His ascension to heaven were necessary BEFORE the Holy Spirit could be given to live IN His disciples. While JESUS was alive as a human being, He told His disciples that He was WITH them, but He also said that there would come the time when He would be IN them.

    God's Spirit chooses what gifts to give to all men (believers) according to their needs in sharing the gospel...

    2 CORINTHIANS 12:7-13,
    [7] But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to EVERY MAN (context to believers) to profit with.
    [8], For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
    [9], To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;

    1 CORINTHIANS 3:1, Know you not that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?

    ..............

    We might leave it here. I see no point in continuing this discussion as your not interested in reading and responding to the posts and scriptures that have been shared with you. You are in error here brother.

    This is only sent in love and has a help.

    Why all the work to prove a simple point one or two scriptures should do?

    You seem to ask for Scriptural proof of a matter that is not only non-biblical, but that does not exist at all.

    Perhaps a person with Pentecostal background, who rejects that background would be inclined to think of "Baptism of the Holy Spirit" being an Apostolic gift. This explanation would seem to defend against Baptism of the Holy Spirit being a post-regeneration special act. That would be an understandable defensive posture.

    Curiously, John the Baptist says that Holy Spirit Baptism is specifically not an Apostolic gift, or for that matter a giving-gift at all. John would indicate that this was an event that would be something Jesus Himself would do in the lives of those who knew Him. Matt. 3:11; Mark 1:8; Luke 3:16. The gift of the Spirit is a gift all believers receive from God, not a special ability to impart the Holy Spirit.

    Also consider how 1 Cor 12:13 could add light to this matter.

    For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.
    One must be very careful (even if well-intended) not to do as the Pharisees and attribute the work of God to the devil.

    Yes, many early Reformed and Wesleyan theologians had some curious twists on all this, hyper-focusing on unusual and specific Biblical events, but I think we can stick with what the Bible says and be fine. Modern Pentecostals also focus on singular present experiences. My view is that they are all more or less right regarding the specific they address, but sometimes hug a tree and miss the forest.

    I only ask for those claiming the Baptism of the Holy Spirit comes in another way besides the two outpourings or through an Apostle's hands prove it from scripture alone. Is that asking too much, especially since the bulk of professing Christendom has been over run by it?

    Consider this;
    According to Curtis Edwards, Pagan Pentecostalism: Its Roots: Sex, Sin & Slavery, Voodoo was the religion of African slaves. And even before slavery they would voodoo any religion they took part in. They had voodoo Catholicism for the main part.

    The after coming to Haitian and American shores, they voodooed what ever religion they encountered. Voodoo Methodism and voodoo Baptist churches, were common in Louisiana.

    Wm. Seymour tried to voodoo the Church of God (Anderson) but got expelled.Shortly thereafter, he voodooed his Wesley Methodism at Azusa street in Los Angeles. He thought voodoo tongues were the same as Bible tongues. This became the Assemblies of God denomination with the Oneness United Pentecostal Church splitting off from them over their antitrinitarian views.
