Didn't the gnostics separate man's soul from his body? Wasn't that one of the main ideas in gnosticism to make a distinction and a separation between that which is The Flesh and that which is Spirit?

Does anyone know of any confession of Faith anywhere that could be regarded as Orthodox that declares that man is just flesh and has no spirit?

    Very strange question.

I do not know of a Christian theology that rejects man as having a spirit (or at least a soul, people have made various distinctions here). But as far as I know all Christians hold that "the flesh" speaks of spirit (a human spirit, "of the flesh") and not just literal (biological) flesh and bones.

In Ezekiel God says He will remove man's old heart and give him a new one, give him a new spirit, put His Spirit in them. This implies a human spirit replaced with God's Spirit (a new birth).

The NT makes the distinctions between the body, soul and spirit. 1 Thessalonians 5:23, ". . . whole spirit and soul and body be preserved . . . ." And Hebrews 4:12, ". . . even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, . . ."

I am a Dichotomist and believe man consists of two parts, material and immaterial (spirit). If man does not have a spirit then eternal life becomes a real problem. Our earthly body will die and undergo corruption, but not so with our promised spiritual body (1 Corinthians 15:42-44).

They did. Such a belief is denial of power of the resurrection.

I have never heard of that view within orthodox Christianity. Have you encountered it?

No. Does not replace it, but comes along side it.

Those of us who now know God do so because, "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: . . ."

No. The spirit of man has a body.

I disagree here (to an extent). In this life I believe it a process but ultimately I do believe God removes our old heart.

I've never encountered the idea man does not hav a spirit in Christianity. Even those who hold to annihilation believe something other than the body is annihilated.

I see us as body, soul, and spirit. Our soul being our person (our being), our spirit akin to our nature (focused on the flesh or the Spirit), and a physical body. But the difference between soul and spirit is not a hill upon which I'd die.

The heart refers to one's intermost being. I agree God changes man's heart. Man's spirit remains a man's spirit. Jeremiah 31:33, ". . . I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; . . . ."

Over and over the same claim that the human spirit's core attributes is not the "soul" is made. But those claiming this fallacy of a three part creation never show where the soul is separated from the spirit, or the spirit is separated from the soul. Ask yourself this one simple question, when the spirit departs and the flesh dies, does our soul or core attributes remain with the flesh or go with the spirit.?

In Matthew 22:37 (Mark 12:30 and Luke 10:27) an expression is used to convey the entirety of our being with nothing left out.

In 1 Thessalonians 5:23, a similar expression is used to convey the entirety of our being with nothing left, rather than convey separate and distinct parts without overlap. Heart and mind and soul overlap and spirit and soul overlap.

Hebrews 4:12 addresses the fact that the God can cut through intertwined components of a person to separate thoughts and intentions. And one such intertwined component is our human spirit with its core attributes, its soul.

I believe God gives man a new spirit but not a new soul.

Is there anyone who believes man has no spirit or soul (that man is just a "lump of flesh"?

This thread seems to be a bit of a strawman issue. I do not understand how the view the OP questions could really exist within Christianity (orthodox or not).

    Reformed,

Not until I saw it suggested on Baptistboard.
It was about a year ago on this thread:
    Spiritual Death
I had listed 26 contradictory ideas from page one, but they no longer appear, however, a careful reading of this thread will immediately reveal "the problem".
    One post said this;
I am suggesting that God made Adam flesh - not spirit.

There is a thread that calls the historic view myths and fables, Then offers the same contradictions against the Historic understanding of these truths.

When you re word and ignore answers, it is easy to do this.

The wonderful thing is everyone can make any claim and then not really back it up.

In the future if anyone states that man is only a "lump of flesh" then please report it.

Looking at the thread I cannot find the claim (referencing 1 Corinthians 15 regarding Adam being made flesh and Christ Spirit, the spiritual coming second does not count due to context).

But unorthodox views are suspect and we need a heads up. Moderator cannot read every post (we try to concentrate on known trouble makers and problems).

We all know Adam was created flesh and not spirit (Adam had a body and was not a ghost).

That said, has anyone on the BB actually claimed Adam was created only flesh and without a spirit or soul????

Whoever made that post either was in the best case being imprecise in their wording or in the worse case in error. Adam was created in the moral likeness of God (Genesis 1:26). The likeness could not have been in God's physical likeness because God is spirit (John 4:24) and the Son of God had not yet revealed Himself in physical form as either a cristophany/theophany or at His incarnation. God made Adam flesh and spirit, just as He does each and every human being.
