Of all topics in scripture, the subject of the Spirit, soul and afterlife, is one of the most intriguing ones. It is also one of the most heavily misunderstood topics as well, and one that satan will use to his advantage in the end times. But like most doctrines in the Bible, so many today view the subject of Biblical life and what happens after death as "something not really all that important to understand. After all, all you have to do is "believe". God will work out all of the other minor things." Have you heard that line before? I know I sure have.

The truth is that God's chosen people (that is, God's people of ALL nations, multitudes, and languages who serve and obey Him) should have a yearning to fully understand ALL of God's messages. With everything, there is a definite Biblical truth. If we pray to earnestly understand it and have an open heart - then God will lead us in the right direction.

I'm not going to spend the time in this article to explain thoroughly what happens at judgment, though that will be briefly touched on. This article is meant to discuss the Biblical differences between the Spirit, the soul, and the body. Trust me, this is extremely important to understand. Having or not having a firm understanding of this will determine if you understand exactly what Jesus did on the cross, what He did afterward, and what He promises for YOU if you die as one of God elect. Also, having a true understanding of this issue will put you in good stead during the last days when satan unleashes his final deceptions.

There is much confusion about God's creation - man. But the following information will (hopefully) give you a clearer understanding of God's creation and the future.

    The Modern Christian Theory
What is mostly taught today is that God created man and placed a spirit "being" inside of him. Additionally, it is taught that man also has a "soul" floating around inside of him, which will eventually "float" off to heaven or "hell".

Woah, let's make an immediate STOP right there! There is already a major problem with this theory. If most believe that we have a "spirit" inside of us, then why is it believed that we also have a "soul" too? Are we to believe the spirit and soul are the same thing? Are there TWO beings trapped inside us?

Before we go further, we must biblically identify what these things are so that we can clear this up.

What is Man Exactly? How Was he Created by God?

Genesis 2:7 (NKJV) ...'And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.'

Genesis 2:7 (KJV) ...'And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.'

As we can see here, a " living being" and a "living soul" are the same exact thing. Also, in this very verse is the entire equation of life. And did you notice the word "became", instead of "was given"? VERY important point! So let's look at the equation of life:

Dust of the ground (body) + The breath of life(spirit) = A living being (soul/Man)

Now doesn't that make a lot of sense? The problem is that this Bible truth already conflicts with the modern theory that a person has a SEPARATE, IMMORTAL spirit/or soul/ or both inside of him. We see that man before coming to life was merely dusted the ground - a breathless, lifeless body. It was the breath of life from God that brought Adam to life, making him a living soul. That's the important point to gain from this. Adam wasn't "GIVEN" a soul. Adam BECAME a living soul with the breath (spirit) of God inside of him.

I stop till here and if their need to be more evidence, I will continue with this true issue BIBLICAL.

    Hi Piprip

You wrote, " The Modern Christian Theory
What is mostly taught today is that God created man and placed a spirit "being" inside of him. Additionally, it is taught that man also has a "soul" floating around inside of him, which will eventually "float" off to heaven or "hell"."

I never heard before about this modern theory in any church I ever been, and I had been in many churches in my life. Anyway, this is complete gibberish.

But you posted right passages there precisely indicated how GOD created first human being.

Concerning spirit, soul, breath, heart, and life, sometimes in the Bible these words meant the same thing, soul and spirit and life, but they also can be separated according to the spiritual context of the person.

    Deuteronomy 12.23-25
23.Only be sure that you do not eat the blood, the blood is the life, and you shall not eat the life with the meat.

This means that blood contains soul-spirit of the creature.

    In another example:

    2Samuel 7.21
21.For the sake of Your word, and according to Your own Heart, You has done all this greatness to let Your servant know.

Here David praises the Lord. The word "Heart" here means GOD'S Soul-Spirit. GOD of course do not has a physical heart, this is a metaphor.

    Psalm 146.4
4.When their breath ("spirit" KSB) departs, they return to the Earth, (Genesis 2.7) (Psalm 146.3-4) (Ezekiel 37.4-10) (Revelation 11.11) (John 20.22) on that very day their plans perish.

"Breath" here also refers as a soul-spirit of human being.

The next verse has very interesting combination.

    Isaiah 42.1
1."Here is My Servant Whom I uphold, My chosen, in Whom My Soul delights, I have put My Spirit upon Him, He will bring forth justice to the nations." (Isaiah 1.27, 2.3, 42.4, 49.6, 51.4-5, 59.20) (Deuteronomy 18.15.18-19) (Micah 4.1-4) (Matthew 12.18-21) (Luke 4.17-19)

These are words of GOD concerning His Son Jesus Christ, and He uses double meaning of His Own Life, Soul and Spirit. Does GOD have both? Of course not, this is a figure of speech which is very often appears in the Bible.

    1Thessalonians 5.23
23.May the GOD of Peace Himself sanctify you entirely, and may your spirit, and soul, and body, be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul also uses same figure of speech - metaphor, combining spirit and soul as the entity of life.

In other instances, generally, soul refers basically to human beings, to those who are not religious. This means they have soul (energy of life given by GOD) but nothing spiritual.

Spirit on the other hand, in some other instances refers to angels, as good or bad spirits. The word "spirit" also can be referred and to religious person, whose soul converted into spirit due to the word of GOD, and this human being became a spiritual person.

Spirit of the spiritual person can be also transferred to another person to make another person spiritual as well. Spirit of Moses was put on the 70 elders of Israel (Numbers 11.17.25).

GOD also can put His Spirit on any man He chooses. In this instances GOD'S Spirit possessing the person, giving His extraordinary physical and spiritual powers, just like with Samson, or can give a gift of prophesy.

    Numbers 24.2
2.Balaam looked up and saw Israel camping tribe by tribe. Then the Spirit of GOD came upon him (on Balaam),

GOD also can control spirits-soul of man, just like it was with the pharaoh of Egypt, his spirit-soul GOD hardened and he refused to let Israelites go. GOD also did the same thing with the king of Canaan.

    Deuteronomy 2.30

30.But Sihon king of Heshbon was not willing for us to pass through his land, the Lord your GOD hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, in order to deliver him into your hand, as he is today.

So as you can see, there are many variations and meanings concerning souls and spirits, but in general terms they are the same thing and are not separated entities, which of course would not make any sense if they are separated.

    Hi Alex.
I see that you know much about the spirit. But I think that you don't have understand why the most Christians today think that they have their OWN Spirit in their body. Nobody have any kind in any sense their own Spirit who have their own physical body. There is the problem. Just like the Holy Spirit. Most Christians today think that the Holy Spirit is an other person. The Trinity doctrine. Three gods in one. God the Father, God the Son and God Holy Spirit. They fail to see that the Holy Spirit is Jesus Himself. Are you one of them that think the same? Maybe if I finished writing about the Spirit, Soul and Body, you will understand me better.
One thing more, my English is very bad because I'm not an English man.

So the living word of God is irrationnal when it says, ". . . For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, . . ." -- Hebrews 4:12?

Ah, no. The three Presons are not three gods, but are the same God, John 4:24. They are the Spirit of God and the Spirit of Christ, Romans 8:9 and the Holy Spirit is Himself, Romans 8:16. Genuine Christians know this knowing God.

Evidently you seem to have a reading deficiency. They are the Spirit of God and the Spirit of Christ, Romans 8:9 and the Holy Spirit is Himself, Romans 8:16.

My friend to understand scriptures we must read the whole context of the story before take verses here and there.
This is my conclusion with the word "they are": they are is not Jesus, not God The Father and not the Holy Spirit. And what do you mean the Holy Spirit is Himself?
    Look and understand.
    Jehovah = God The Father.
Jesus = The Son of God.
Holy Spirit = The Spirit of God and Jesus. And that Spirit is their BREATH/MIND. It is their POWER. The Holy Spirit is not an other person. It is Jesus Himself in us talking or preaching to the world. There is no other Spirit in me than the Holy Spirit. My body have no place for demons.

It seems that you are confused.
Unless you also understand the Son of God is Jehovah too, you do not know God the Father who sent His Son. (John 17:3.)
In Jesus' own words, "no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." John 14:6

Jesus says, if you see me you have seen my Father. Jesus didn't say if you see me I'm also the Father. They are two separate being with the same Spirit (breath/mind). That Spirit is Holy, because God The Father and Jesus is Holy. This is BIBLICAL teaching.

Do you or do you not understand God the Father, the Son of God and the Holy Spirit to be three distinct Persons but one and the same God, Jehovah, John 4:24? Matthew 28:19. John 16:7-11.

    Persons 1 + 1 + 1 = 3. As God 1 = 1 = 1.

Remember at Jesus' baptism, Luke 3:22, "And the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art My beloved Son; in Thee I am well pleased." The Holy Spirit and God His Father to Jesus are distinct at that event.

If you understood my view you could place both views side by side with their respective Scripture references paired.
Do you know why John 16:7-11 was referenced?

My friend Jesus was talking about HIMSELF. Why is it hard to believe in the Bible alone? A question: Do you have read that the Holy Spirit speaks to God The Father and Jesus His Son? Do the Father and the Son have speak with the Holy Spirit? If you find it in the Bible show me so that I can believe that the Holy Spirit is another being separated from the Father and His Son.

    Hi Pipripi.

I remember very well when argued with one guy on Chrsitianforum.com. He actually said that the Holy Spirit is the separate Entity from GOD Father and Jesus Christ.

So I explained to him very much in the same manner as I responded to you in my post, indicating that the GOD Father and Jesus Christ are Both Holy Spirit, because They Both posses (share) one Holy Spirit. So when we read in the Bible "Holy Spirit" this means Father and Son, no difference. Only They posses Holy Spirit and nobody else, so this term belongs only to them.

Christians call Them Holy Trinity. I think Trinity is not Biblical word but was created by Christian theology. And the word Trinity itself do not reflect reality of GOD, because there is not third separated party among Them.

Only GOD Father and His Son are Holy Spirit. As it written about Them, They Are One, so there is no room for a third holy spirit party, only Two. So in reality they are Duo Holy Spirit, and nor trio.

I also ask the guy, "If the Holy Spirit is separate entity, then how GOD Father and His Son Jesus Christ can be holy? This means that Father and Son are not Holy." Certainly it makes no sense.

The guy never responded to me and did not answer my question. I think he understood that he mislead himself on this issue.

    Hi 37818.

    You posted:

"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, . . ." -- Hebrews 4:12?

What you trying to say by this, what we have spirit and soul in us at the same time? So you took it not as a metaphor but literally. OK.

    Psalm 104.29-30
29.You hide Your face, they are dismayed, You take away their spirit, they expire and return to their dust. (KSB) (Psalm 104.29) (Ecclesiast 12.7).

If spirit of man returns to GOD, where the soul will go?

    Psalm 146.3
4.When their breath departs, they return to the Earth on that very day their plans perish.

Well, in this verse nothing said about spirit or soul, how you can explain this? Is this means that our spirit and soul will be buried with us in the grave?

    James 1.21
21.Therefore, rid yourselves of all sordidness and rank growth of wickedness, and welcome with meekness the implanted Word that has the power to save your souls.

    1Peter 1.9
9.you are receiving the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

If our souls are saved, what would happen to our spirits?

Please, answer these questions for me?
