I realise this season is not the best time to travel, but my personal circumstances are leading me to consider a kind of retreat in which I go and experience the worship traditions of various communities I have long been attracted to in the US and Scotland.

I have never been to the US, so forgive my ignorance. I am especially interested in visiting congregations which still practice "lining out" - my understanding is that these are the Old Regular Baptist Churches. Are there any specific congregations that I should seek out, and is there any information on whether they are still open and singing during the Covid restrictions? I am open to other suggestions too - such as Exclusive Psalmody churches.

In Scotland I want to visit Gaelic and English Psalm-singing congregations. Suggestions here would also be appreciated.

I don't yet know the timing - if I have to wait for global restrictions to ease up, then I will wait.

I think most Old Regular Baptist Churches have opened back up at present. Lined singing is also found among some of the Cherokee Christians and among the Regular Baptist , Regular Primitive Baptist , Old School Regular Baptist , and many " Old School " Primitive Baptist Churches and Associations. We line sing at my home church back in Kentucky, I am in Florida at present and the Churches here don't line other than the Old Regular Baptist and a few " Old School "Primitive Baptist .

Hello Old Regular... Brother Glen, Primitive Baptist here... Was a song leader in my church on the West Coast in San Diego, CA, for over 35 years... Didn't see or hear any lining in our part of the country but I heard it was quite the practice back East... I do believe the lining started because, not everyone had a song book, that is my understanding... I know for a fact that kyredneck is one... I call him Kentucky because that is where he is from... I know also that rlvaughn sings Sacred Harp, but that takes a lot of practice and my song leading days are past... Just thought I would touch base while you are around... Love acapella church singing, it just seems to have a fire the other types of singing doesn't at least for me... I think you know what I mean!... Just another Hard Shell!... Brother Glen:)

My understanding is that the early Church was made up of Jewish believers , the lining of the Psalms was a carry over, thus Paul writing to the Ephesians 5:19 " Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs , singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord: " I spoke to a Rabbi who said they still had Cantors. I know that in England the practice of singing among the Baptist had ceased or never begun, maybe due to fear of persecution. The Baptist of Wales did however hymn line and in Scotland they called it '' precenting the line '' I have listened to the Gaelic psalmody on the Isle of Lewis , the tunes had a familiar sound to them. The Westminster Assembly approved of its usage because many members of their congregations could not read. I know that most Old School Baptist members in the 1800's had their own personal hymn books . There was a great many Christians of Hebrew origins among the Old Regular/ Primitive Baptist who helped preserve this type of singing also the Sisters set on one side of the building and the Brothers on the other. The names Old Regular and Primitive were synonymously used as they were the same people, the ''Old Regular or Regular Primitive'' before Baptist typically denotes their mode of worship not their doctrine and you will typically find lined singing among those groups ,however split they maybe in their doctrine. The Sovereign Grace Association of Old School or Old Regular Baptist corresponds with the Old Line and the Old School Primitive Baptist . We do not correspond with the larger " Andrew Fuller Atonement " bodies of Regular and Primitive Baptist. I was stationed in San Diego back in 1982 , I never could find a Primitive Baptist Church . I love all the Primitive Baptist styles of singing but favor the ''lined '' . I glad there are a few Hardshells left on the Baptist Board , I belonged to several other Christian forums they did not like my Primitive '' Monergism'' vs their Synergism. We had an " Old Regular Baptist" on the board here once who has since passed Brother Bob he was from the Softshell side , but we stayed friends. It was very good to hear from you.

It's been a while and I'm glad to come back and see this discussion. Thanks for the tips! My original plan was to visit both Old Regular congregations in the US and Gaelic congregations in the Hebrides, but at present a visit to just the Hebrides looks more likely in terms of logistics and finances during these Covid days. Hope to get to the US one day though!

There's other congregations out here in the mountains that line in addition to our Primitive and Old Regular brethren, although these two do it the most often. Regular Baptist, and Union Baptist will sometimes line and often are acapella in Southwest Virginia, West Virginia, and parts of eastern KY. You'll find acapella in the Conservative Mennonite congregations out here too, but not lining. Just sung with them this morning. Get ready for culture shock if you do head out here ;).

If they ain't lining that day then you'll often get this sort of style for the solo singing part of the service:

    God Bless you n'yours Brother!

Confession of Faith : While we believe that the Old and New Testament Scriptures are the only written rule of faith and practice with authority . We do hold to the historic Regular Baptist '' Outline of Doctrine and Practice'' known as the'' Philadelphia Baptist Confession of Faith '' 1742 this manifested in our Articles of Faith and Abstract Principles but not as to Lord over us and not considered an infallible Confession.
We do believe in Particular Election an effectual calling of God and Special or Particular Atonement , we hold that repentance and faith are gifts of God. That all the elect are preserved in Christ and thus the final perseverance and security of believers is in Christ. That Baptism by immersion and Church Membership are for those under the Gospel Address, who have manifested repentance and faith toward God and have a reason for their hope in Christ . We practice the Lord's Supper and Feet Washing. That nothing should be done on man's authority . We hold that good works are the fruit of God's gracious work on the heart of the believer, and not the cause of it .
This Association Churches practices line singing .

Just keep in mind that there is a difference in Regular Baptists!

Of course, one general group is the Regular Baptists as mentioned by "Old Regular"
and then you have the General Association of Regular Baptists which are often referred to as "Regular Baptists" ---- Just saying.
