Cost of HS football

It is estimated that it costs about $1,000 to dress one football payer.
So if a team has 40 players - thats $40,000 right there
then the salary of the coaches, other equipment - lights for night games,
salary of those to prep the field - pay for the refs, ect, ect ect-
would not surprise me if it cost one million dollars to have a football team.

Lets say a high school has 2,000 students - then only 2% of the students are on the team.
Should taxpayers be required to pay for an activity that only a very few participate?
Yes, I know that school spirit, ect is involved.

One could ask the same thing about any costs associated with the band, the cheerleaders, the pep squad, the basketball team, the baseball team, other activities where only a few students are involved.

Of course, the issue goes away if education is separate from government, since education is not one of the three natural functions of government.

There is no person - they are natural functions - just like humans have natural functions - breathing, sleeping, etc.

That's not the whole story with football. A stadium is used for football, track and field and marching band. The coach does get extra but is usually a teacher too. You have ticket sales for every event. You rent out the stadium for other events. You have a booster club and the students go out and make money for the expenses. They hand out programs at each game and all the small businesses in the area buy advertising on the program. They have an electric sign now that runs commercials to defray costs. It's still a net drain I admit. That's why a lot of rural areas don't have football teams but it isn't all that bad overall. And some years it's more fun than watching overpaid, spoiled pros from all over the country masquerading as "your" team.

The school does not pay for "hair jobs" or nails or gymnastic lessons. In fact, I think the parents pay for the uniforms.

Football generates a HUGE amount of money for schools. That money goes into the athletic funds that help pay for travel expenses and a whole lot more. Generally for all sports at the school.

Coaches' salaries are paid out of the general fund that also pays teachers. Coaches are classified as instructors. They have college degrees and generally teach a subject or two.

Public funds for public/charter schools come from: federal taxes [8-9%] for students with disabilities and students who are economically disadvantaged, state taxes [the overwhelming bulk and varies from state to state], and local taxes [generally a much lesser amount]. Then there are grants, fundraising funds, donations, and a few more things.
