Political reality is an excuse.
The reality is that we, the people, are sanctioning murder.
The reality is that we need politicians who will fight to change that.
And, the reality is that most Christians are content to sit by and accept the excuses of their favorite politicians who are doing nothing to stop abortion, yet say whatever they calculate will extend their pathetic political careers and fatten their pensions.
Let's stop accepting and making excuses and demand that our representatives take action.
All five of the new GOP Senators ran as pro-lifers and in part as people who would help break the obstruction of pro-life judicial appointees.
These guys haven't even been seated yet Jim.
Let's see if the GOP in the Senate remembers who buttered their bread next year.
One thing I wish Bush would do though is make a bunch of recess appointments of pro-life conservatives.
This would force the hand of the Senate, in particular Specter.
I love this statement.
Exactly how would the number be "higher" had "Kerry been elected?"
Perhaps you could offer some EVIDENCE to support such a bizarre claim, and enlighten us as to how the number would be "higher."
This too is a statement that I love.
Perhaps you didn't notice that neither the Bush Administration nor the GOP made any attempts to overturn Roe v. Wade during his first term.
Bush now has a "mandate," and I have yet to hear anyone else theorize that overturning Roe v. Wade is in this "mandate."
Another point worth noting is the fact that the GOP controls the House, the Senate, the White House, and the Supreme Court.
Yet they still have made no effort to overturn Roe v. Wade.
To use incorrect grammar: it ain't gonna happen, Joseph.
Again, to use incorrect grammar: it ain't gonna happen, Joseph.
Again, to use incorrect grammar: it ain't gonna happen, Joseph.
If Roe v. Wade were going to be overturned, it would have already been done.
Why let the government legistlate morality? How many of us here have either worked at a pregnancy center, worked with young people, taught them about the consequences of premarital sexual behavior, and other real forms of helping. I cannot help but think that the people who are the loudest on this issue haven't done anything real to stem the tide of abortion in the first place. If you're serious about not wanting to see children being murdered in the womb, why not do something about it?
Tell us all what you have done, Jim. </font>[/QUOTE]Written and called my representatives.
Signed petitions.
Urged others to become involved.
REfused to vote for politicians who have not demonstrated commitment to rights of the unborn.
Worked in campaigns for pro-life candidates.
Volunteered and contributed to pregnancy centers.
All in all, less than I should have, but something at least.
You're right, let's wait and see.
But, what evidence do we have that would make us think that abortion will be outlawed?
As to the Senate remembering...I think the main lesson for them in this past election was taught to them by Arlen Specter...it you're a Republican, you've got the evangelical vote in your pocket even if you're radically pro-abortion.
As to Bush making recess appointments of pro-lifers, I wouldn't hold my breath.
His lengthy, detailed agenda has been on his official website for months.
Abortion is not even mentioned.
It's mainly a plan to expand the power and expense of the federal government.
You presume quite a lot for yourself.
Many of us have done a lot of real work in this area.
As to the rest of your point, it is entirely without merit.
We teach children not to steal...does that mean that there should be no civil penalty for theft?
How about assault?
You ask "Why let the government legistlate morality?".
Let me ask you: What else can the government legislate?
It isn't only about morality although government does legislate many issues that overlap with morality.
It is about the right of an individual human being to live.
The very same premise that says governments can legitimately outlaw murder applies to abortion.
Both of these things deny another person their right to live without them having provided just cause.
The most innocent people on earth are unborn babies.
About 98% of all women who have an abortion already exercised their free choice when they engaged in sex.
That is the percentage of abortions that are elective... not medical, not rape, not incest.
Abortion isn't about protecting a legitimate right... it's about allowing people to shirk the responsibility that comes with exercising a right and not having it work out as hoped.
I don't believe this is true at all.
Most Americans couldn't even describe in generalities what this decision involved or how it was arrived at.
According to the polls, something like 60% think Roe v Wade should not be overturned yet a greater percentage think that judges should rule on law rather than making law.
I believe that pro-lifers should and to some extent have focused on defining when life begins.
This will necessitate that Roe v Wade be revisited at some point.
The pro-life movement has to be the worst PR campaign in history.
It holds all of the trump cards and never plays them.
Why not public service commercials that show a color display of a 12 week old fetus?
Why not explain that most abortions kill an unborn that meets all of the legal requirements for being "alive" except that they happen to be in a womb?
Instead of educating people, they go out and protest clinics opening themselves up to being marginalized by the media.
The only one that really matters is the volunteering and contributing to pregnancy certers, in my opinion. Signing petitions and encouraging representatives is nice, but hasn't been able to stop a single abortion. We need more Christians who are willing to stand up and actually be directly involved with the populations who are choosing to receive these abortions.
