Strange waste of time if the local church is autonomous.
But, if that local pastor needs to find direction from others, then they will attend.

Even "Independent Fundamental Baptists" have get-togethers!
Jack Hyles was often the guest speaker at the gatherings thur out the Country.

I've wanted to know why the annual meeting is only two days, compared to three back in the days of all the uproar in the 80s and before?

Could be finances - not only for the SBC itself, but for messengers as well - hotel, meals, ect.

Proposed 2-day SBC meeting heads to Salt Lake messengers
The SBC Executive Committee, during its Feb. 16 meeting in Nashville, Tenn., approved a recommendation for a Tuesday-Wednesday agenda to replace the longstanding Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday annual meeting. The proposal will require a two-thirds vote by messengers in Salt Lake City.

According to the study committee, "... in recent years, many messengers have adopted the practice of leaving before the Thursday morning session, sometimes resulting in the lack of a quorum and usually a low attendance for the keynote speaker."
