I could not complete the questionnaire because none of the choices to number two apply.
-
No.
I would not answer those questions for membership because most of them have nothing to do with membership.
You "poll" is seriously flawed and I am not really sure what you are driving at.

You're kidding, right??
This questionnaire looks like some I have refused to answer as a missionary. Some things are to be left between me and my Lord. -
I have no problem answering them - just understanding some of them. What's RA and GA for a start? And how is one to answer about vacation bible school if one's church doesn't have one?
Liz -
To those of you asking if I am kidding or not.
I wish I was. Unfortuantely, these are the the exact or very close duplicates of questions that were asked of potential members at a church I visited.
Do you see why I have problems with "applying for memberships in churches" by allowing current members to "give tests" or "interviews."
As to those of you who say, "They didn't apply to my church," well - that's another problem for people who give such tests.
How can we, as Christians, judge the measure of another Christian's faith?
Again - I don't agree with the questions. I have actually seen 15 of them asked of people seeking membership in a church. -
Some of your questions don't offer enough options.
-
Many are flawed questions. For example, "Was Paul a disciple?" Strictly speaking, Yes. Any serious Christian is a disciple [follower; one who adheres to the teaching and discipline of...]. But the understood meaning scripturally is usually those 12 guys Jesus hung around with and taught and sometimes authorized to do miracles.
-
some of the questions are not very well written because the last 2 churches i was a member at prior to this pastorate only had Sunday morning services. One was a growing church plant and the other had 3 Sunday morning services and discipleship studies on Sunday nights...so i can only attend worship on Sunday mornings.
-
My answers:
How long have you been a Christian?
Over 10 years.
Did you try to attend all services at your last Church?
Yes; Sunday Morning, Sunday Evening, Wednesday Evening, Tuesday Visitation. If the door opened, I was there.
***clarification - we only hold Sunday morning services regularly, so if the door was open, then I was there. (We also have an annual weekend meeting, and I am at that as well.)
Did you tithe 10% of your income on a regular basis?
No
***Don't believe in tithing.
Did you teach Sunday School?
No
***Don't believe in having Sunday School, which my church doesn't have anyway.
Did you visit shut-ins?
No
***Small church; no shut-ins other than my 82 year old grandmother, whom I see daily, but she still goes to church about twice a month anyway.
Were you in the choir?
No
***Don't believe in having choirs, which my church doesn't have anyway.
Did you work in Vacation Bible School?
No
***My church does not hold a Vacation Bible anything as we do not wish to promote and/or sponsor extra-biblical things. I do, however, go to a Singing School every year which is founded on biblical principles, though not sponsored by any church, at which I have been head of security for the past 5 years.
How many people did you personally lead to Christ last year?
0
***Christ doesn't need my help to call his sheep.
Do you ever sin anymore?
Of course
***Paul said he was chief of sinners. I bet he and I would be in a close race for that title.
Can you quote from memory 3 or more verses from the Bible?
Yes
***I don't know anyone, Christian or not, who can't even quote 3 bible verses. I think people would be surprised by the number of verses that they actually can quote.
Have you been Baptized?
Yes
***October 19, 1991
Was Paul a disciple?
Yes
***As stated above, we are all disciples, but was he an apostle? I believe that answer is "yes" as well. He even says as much.
Who do you think should have authority in the church?
All of the above
***Elders and Deacons and so-called "lay-members" all have a certain level of authority. Though, the final authority on all matters affecting the church lies with the church as a whole.
How should women dress in the church?
Modestly, but dresses or pants.
***If a lady wants to wear ladies pants, then she should wear ladies pants. I would not go, however, for a lady to wear blue jeans and a tank top. Modesty is the major key. Anything else depends on what you can afford without appearing gawdy.
Do you ever, ever drink? Even a toast a New Years?
Yes - I'll have one drink once in awhile.
*** At least twice a year when Communion roles around. It's been about 2 weeks since my last glass of wine. I need to buy some.
Do you ever gamble? Even just to buy a raffle ticket?
Yes - I buy raffle tickets or lottery tickets sometimes.
*** Haven't bought a lottery ticket in quite a while due to finances. I don't spend what I can't afford to lose. That should be the reasoning for anyone spending their money, whether on a lottery ticket or a new house.
How many times did you miss Sunday morning services last year?
About 5
***Actually, probably closer to 10. I go out of town pretty frequently, by most standards. I do, however, almost always attend a PB church somewhere, even when out of town, unless I am sick in the bed.
Do you/ have you teach/taught RA's or GA's?
No
*** I picked "no" because I don't know what this question means.
Do you believe baptism is a requirement of Salvation?
No
*** Not in my Bible.
Do you believe once saved always saved?
Yes
*** Now that is in my Bible.
Have you ever been divorced?
No
***Never even been married.
How many people have you had sex with in your life?
0
***Again, never even been married. Of course, that doesn't answer the question nowadays.
Do you associate with non-Christians?
Only at work because I have to.
***I chose this only because I don't believe anyone has the ability to say if someone is saved or not. If the last option was "I have friends that aren't church-goers" or something to that effect, then I'd have to say that at least half of my family fits that bill, along with some friends. I don't associate with anyone because I have to, I do it because I want to.
Do you do a Bible reading every night?
No
***I wish I could say otherwise, but I just many times make excuses to myself about why I don't "need" to read tonight.
Do you pray every day?
Yes
I can say a definite "yes" for this one. There is always someone, somewhere in need of our prayers.
Speaking of which, I lost a cousin yesterday from a massive heart attack. He was a healthy, vibrant 57 year old man with much life ahead to look forward to, including his first grandson due next month. Please pray for all of our family. He and my mother were very close.
He showed no signs of disease and only had pains for a few minutes before passing away.
Let that be a warning for everyone to be checked, even if no signs of heart disease are detectable to us.
I will not be on the board tomorrow or Saturday because I will be at the funeral.
God bless you all.
Bro. James -
The only thing that concerned me----was the tithing question! There was no blank for "Over 10% Regularly"
10% is where beginners get in!Giving by G-R-A-C-E always goes above and beyond a tithe----sorta like the difference between a Piper Cub and an F-18 Hornet!!! -
I would not become a member of a church that asked these questions for determination of membership.
What happened to:
Do you believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God?
Do you have a submission heart to everything that God says? -
I'm personally shocked at some of the answers given!
BTW.... I'm one of the 12 who has only had sex with one person. My husband. -
Bro James - I have prayed for your family. I am so sorry for your families pain. I know that you will miss your loved one. May God ease the pain the time apart.
Diane,
Remember - some people weren't saved until later in life. Some people make mistakes in life even after they are saved. -
By the way, people who remarry after a spouse's death have had sex with more than one person, so not all of these responses may be what you think.
We are not proud of our failures. In fact, this board is lucky to have people honest enough to give real answers instead of sugar-coating them to make them sound perfect. Church would be a lot better if it were like an AA meeting.
Hi, my name's Stefan, and I'm a sinner. -
Bro. James, Praying for you and your family. My first husband died at the age of 57 of a heart attack. No warning or heart disease. He did have a check up and tests just a few weeks before. Life is so precious!
-
Ah, Stefan and TXSky, if we were ALL as perfect as some, then we perhaps wouldn't stand out so much, don't you agree? Hi, my name is "Saved Sinner".
-
Stefan,
You've hit on one of my pet-peeves with "applications for church membership." I hold very strongly to Christ's words that we not judge one another, and to the statement we should worry more about the mote in our eye than the splinter in someone else's. For anyone who hasn't learned this yet, a "mote" is more like a log than a splinter.
We all sin. I see where Christ told us what the greatest commandments are. I know that blaspheming the Holy Spirit is the greatest sin. Otherwise, I don't recall God saying, "Adultry is worse than bearing false witness." (Gossip folks.)
So I don't think any of us should throw stones.
I don't approve of the test I posted. That's why I posted it. In hopes of making people wake up. -

At the church I'm a member of we have interviws between applicants and a couple of appropriate members. Don't ask that lot of questions though, is very basic. Something like .." Tell us about your becoming a Christian", " Thell us about your walk with God since then", and "Why do you want to become a member of this local church?" .. it then focusses on answering questions the applicant may have about the church and what it currently does, and where it seems to be heading.
Those doing theinterview usually kind of mentor the new members for while to help them get integrated with the other members of the church.
