Mosque to go up near New York's ground zero

I say these guys are really pushing it.
Go figure.
New Yorkers in particular should reject the proposal.
I know I would if I were living in New York city, and I know I definitely would if this proposal were made more nationwide which it should because the victims of that murderous event whom the "martyrs" of the "religion of peace" murdered were from many parts of the US.

New York (CNN) -- Plans to build a mosque two blocks away from ground zero have set off an emotional debate among area residents and relatives of victims of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.
Cordoba House project calls for a 15-story community center including a mosque, performance art center, gym, swimming pool and other public spaces.
The project is a collaboration between the American Society for Muslim Advancement and the Cordoba Initiative, both of which work to improve relations with followers of the religion.
The two groups presented their vision to part of the Community Board of lower Manhattan on Wednesday night.
Ro Sheffe, a board member who attended the meeting, said the project did not need to get the board's approval.
"They own the land, and their plans don't have any zoning changes," Sheffe said. "They came to us for our opinions and to let us know their plans. It was purely voluntary on their part."

They own the land so they can do what they want ?
How about I own my house and lot in the subdivision so I can mow the lawn when I want to, unlitter it when I want to, or pee and crap on it when I want to ?

Kind of reminds me of war--when a party conquers an area they "claim" it by putting up their flag. Makes me wonder if muslims are claiming they conquered the site by putting up a mosque. At any rate, I find it offensive.

The question would be which brand of Islam is connected with the mosque. After all, many American Muslims are more "liberalized', and disclaim the militant brand.
But still, it does seem odd and ironic.
Just like in the "racial profiling" issue, it looks almost like people are playing us for our values, and using them to create double-binding confusion as to whether we should maintain their freedoms, which they could use against us in their war, or deny their freedoms, which they could claim contradicts our whole premise.

You're right on target!

No doubt there are sentiments and good arguments on both sides... from people of all walks of faith and religion and belief in freedom.....and this plays into the whole scheme:

An fyi that there is already a mosque a few streets from ground zero. I just looked up "mosque near world trade center, ny, ny" in google maps and Masjid Manhattan (or Manhattan Mosque) showed up a 5 min walk from the WTC. It's been in the area since 1970.

This new mosque would halve the short distance between the WTC and the nearest mosque by a few hundred feet.

There are churches in Jerusalem but not in Mecca. Christians and any other non Muslims are not allowed to even go to Mecca let alone set up a church there.

That's been in the area since 1970, it will be wrong to call for its destruction or removal.
On the other hand, this one is being set up AFTER the violent fundamentalists of their religion attacked the United States of America.
A little sensitivity and discretion should at least dictate that they NOT put up a new mosque considering the emotional effects on the victims of the violence.
How come when they are involved we need to be politically correct, and when it's about non-muslims, they can say the hell with political correctness?

Then I guess no Japanese should live within two blocks of Pearl Harbor, no Germans within two blocks of a synagogue and all Yankees need to move away from Vicksburg. While we're at it, why don't we just have the other six mosques in Manhattan pack their things and move to Long Island. It seems the only objections raised in this article is that the developers are Muslim and the project is a mosque. There appears to be no history of their support for terrorism nor that deathly brand of radical Islam. The terrorist that murdered so many on 9/11 no more represent Muslims than Westboro represents Baptists.

Folks are acting like these folks were part of 9/11 and were building at Ground Zero with a sign on the building that says "Thanks for Vacating this Hard to Find Property. They already own the property they propose to develop. Maybe we should canvas Midtown and seize all property owned by Muslims within a 10 block radius. 10 blocks might still be too close for some so a fifteen block option should be included. Don't forget to get all the Japanese and Germans while we're cleansing.

Lest we forget, the British killed or captured over 5000 Americans on this same piece of property in December 1776. We might as well include them in our purge.

And that is the sort of country which YOU want to live in as long as YOU and your soul mates are running the show.
