I have just found out recently that Norton Symantec no longer update versions of their software that are old versions. You must buy a new Software package and license it for two years. When it runs out you pay again to relicense it and so on.
In Australia, Norton, Mc Caff, Vet etc go for about $120.00. However none of these will run on a windows 95 platform. Yet there is a website on line called www.grisoft.com which offers you a free anti virus programme.
So why is it for free?
I have heard that a number of free programmes contain "spy software" which enable them to obtain data on what sites you visit etc.
So any solutions for a win 95 user to go on a new system?
Anti Virus Software.

The AVG 6.0 is free. But if you want more, then grisoft offer you an antivirus with more, for sale.
I use the AVG 6.0 with my Norton. Actually I paid 59.00 for Norton 2002 Sytemworks. But had to buy norton antivirus (also 59.00) too. It did not come with it. I use the AVG 6.0 to scan my mail. I like it better. Norton has let things slide through, where the AVG6.0 picks stuff out real quick. I am thinking of buying the full version of AVG 6.0, only if it offers the same as Nortons optimizing the files, and Find and Fix problems. I do like the One Button check from Norton too.
I am not sure what the full version from AVG 6.0 offers.

Ben,
Nonags ( http://www.nonags.com/nonags/ check under "Essentials: Antivirus Scanners") specializes in providing freeware for download that is spyware/adware free. It lists several free antivirus programs that obtained the highest Nonags rating (a six). They all are listed as Windows 9x compatible.
Avast! 4 home Edition http://www.avast.com/avast4/
AntiVir Personal Edition http://www.free-av.com/
AVG Anti-virus Free Edition http://www.grisoft.com/html/us_downl.htm . I think this is the one you were already looking into, so you can be confident it isn't spyware.
Also, you might want to check out this site, http://wilders.org/index.htm , which offers some great security freeware downloads and reviews.
Hope this has been of help to you. -
Norton System Works Pro comes with Norton Antivirus. The "Pro" version has Norton internet security which in addition to ad removal and parental control features comes with Norton Antivirus. Another antivirus to look into if you're willing to pay for it is Panda Software's Antivirus:

They also have a free online virus scanner that is updated daily. The free Active Scan won't prevent you from getting a virus though as it isn't always running in the background. However if you know or suspect that you have a virus or if you just want to make sure it can be very useful. -
Thankyou, I like the look of AVG, lets see how we go.
It was suggested that If I simply re install norton Anti Virus, that it will be able to be updated with definitions again. Apparently Norton like to get you to pay more money by blocking you off. Anybody heard of this idea? -
AVG is excellent - I much prefer it to Norton

I have been using the free version of AVG for almost a year, and it has worked great for me. It automatically updates itself to recognize new viruses as they appear on the web. So far it has caught 7 or 8 viruses on my system and dealt with them.

So how does AVG make money by providing people with a free virus software and updates?
