A U.S. appeals court struck down a Texas law on Wednesday requiring voters to show authorized identification before casting ballots, saying the measure violated the U.S. Voting Rights Act through its "discriminatory effects."
The decision from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit pertained to one of a series of laws enacted in Republican-governed states requiring potential voters to show identification that Democrats saw as intended to disenfranchise minorities who typically support their party.
"We affirm the district court's finding that SB 14 (Texas Senate Bill 14) violates Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act through its discriminatory effect," a three-judge panel from the New Orleans-based court said.
The measure was signed into law in 2011 by then Texas Governor Rick Perry, a Republican, and has been the subject of legal battles since then.
Plaintiffs argued the law would hit elderly and poorer voters, including minorities, hardest because they are less likely to have such identification.

You have to have ID to sign up for the government programs they're on. You have to have ID to buy cold medicine. You have to have ID to fly/ride AMTRAK. You have to have ID to buy liquor.
Somebody's story does not add up. Why does the court claim they're less likely to have ID? Why don't they complain about having to show ID in every other area? -

Here I receive a voters card through the mail. However, if my name is on the list of voters the ID card is not ask for. Doesn't Texas have a registered voters register?

And how is a state issued ID not authorized identification?

Well:
By being sure the "wrong folk" have a long way to travel to get their cards.
By under manning and forcing long waits at registration places where those "wrong folk" would have to go to register.
By nit picking forms to reject those from the "wrong folk".
Intimidation of the poor, those from the wrong ethnic groups, the elderly.
Providing no chairs for the elderly to sit in as they waited their turn.
Having offices open for only short periods only two days a week.
I am sure you could think of other ways to discourage folk from registering.

That's REALLY all the Voter ID stuff and immigration have been about. Folks just don't want to point out that big elephant. -

Well, since you made the claim, why don't you go ahead and tell us.
You say it's discriminatory, but everything you made up affects everyone, not just one group. So how is that discriminatory? -

This is about cutting into those stalwart Democrat voting blocs.
If the GOP can't win the black voters by flying their racist representing flags, they figure they'd just keep them from the polls and voting for the Dems.
This isn't rocket science. It was a very simple plan actually. But no one seems to want to acknowledge it for what it is. -

All this could work both ways depending on whose in power and who the 'right' and 'wrong' folk are.
Enough of your silly questions. Bye. -

I see the courts are still in the Democrats pockets. Have to make sure they can continue to steal elections.
I have to wonder though can I cry discrimination next time I'm asked to show ID. I think I would like to open a bank account without ID, or I fly somewhere, or even get a library card. How about not having to show ID to get a marriage license, or even better a passport. It is discriminatory how much ID you have to show to get a passport. Obviously the federal government only wants upper class to be able to travel internationally since they make it so hard to get a passport and don't even get me started on the cost. :BangHead: -

I never cease to be amazed at the idiocy used to condemn something as simple as verifying a person's legality to vote!
When so much that requires an ID is accepted w/o question, the venom against the same to vote is so obviously a threat to the Dims that all stops are pulled out.
The most asinine arguments are being spewed forth that one wonders if the spewer even really knows what they are talking about!! I'm convinced that somewhere in the dim dark past the DNC sent out "talking points" re: this subject as a spur of the moment thing and never considered how utterly illogical they really are. Unfortunately, they took root and now the same vomit is regurgitated routinely with no sense of shame or embarrassment.
I'm now understanding how the ZERO got a 2nd term; a situation that may have been prevented had voter ID been in place at the time.
If you single minded lemmings get what you claim you want, this nation will be a third world country in less than 5 years - or sooner. -
Like I said, this is nothing more than a GOP attempt to keep black people, whom they can't lure to the GOP while spewing anti-Black sentiment and waving a racist representing flag, from voting en masse for the Dems.
Thanks for confirming it.:)

On the other hand, to keep and bear arms most definitely is a constitutional right. Yet to buy a gun one must show identification and be older than the age at which legal voting cannot be denied.
Explain this ridiculous inconsistency. If you still claim (as I'm sure you will) that voting is a constitutional right, and therefore it cannot be required to prove who you are and where you live, then how is it constitutional to require that of a prospective gun buyer? -

Good luck with it when it goes to the SC.
