Bergdahl freed. Disgusting.

    Bergdahl dishonorably discharged, no jail time after emotional trial


    More than eight years after Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl walked off his base in Afghanistan -- and unwittingly into the clutches of the Taliban -- Bergdahl walked out of a North Carolina courtroom a free man on Friday.

    Bergdahl, who pleaded guilty to endangering his comrades, was fined, reduced in rank to E1 and dishonorably discharged -- but he received no prison time.

    The guy was a schitzophrenic, he should've never been in the military to begin with:

    "...The general who investigated Bergdahl’s desertion recommended he not go to prison, saying the soldier was delusional when he left the base in the Piktika Province in 2009. A preliminary hearing officer suggested the whole incident could have been avoided "had concerns about Sergeant Bergdahl's mental health been properly followed up."..."

    No prison time. Even after this:

    "The military court judge heard from former Navy SEAL James Hatch and Army Capt. John Billings, Bergdahl’s platoon leader when he walked off post. He also heard from three other service members on day one of the sentencing hearings – Sgt. Evan Buetow, from Bergdahl’s unit; Col. Clinton Baker, Bergdahl’s battalion commander; and retired aviation Col. John White.

    Hatch was shot in the leg during the mission to find Bergdahl after he left his outpost in Afghanistan in 2009.

    Day two of testimony in the case of accused deserter Bergdahl heard more emotional recounts of horrifying injuries from service members who were on the team assigned to search for Bergdahl.

    Jonathan Morita, who left the Army as a Sergeant, gave graphic testimony about how his hand was shattered by a rocket-propelled grenade during the search mission, which left it “dangling off” his arm at the time. After several surgeries, Morita is left without full use of his dominant hand.

    Master Sgt. Mark Allen suffered a head wound during the ambush; he now is unable to speak and uses a wheelchair. National Guard Staff Sgt. Jason Walters submitted emotional testimony on Thursday about the moment Allen was hit, and then trying to dress Allen’s head wound."


    This is a travesty.

    I'm afraid that Trump scuppered any chance of a just sentence with his inane tweeting. Someone needs to explain to him the concept of sub judice. Better still, take his Twitter account away.

    His action caused the wounding/deaths of his fellow soldiers, would that not have merited firing squad in earlier times?
    Maybe Him and Chelse manning can get together and do a reality show?

    The man is/was mentally ill. Can't you show just a little compassion? The Army failed to perform its due diligence by not getting his 201 file from the Coast Guard which clearly showed he had been medically discharged for mental illness. He should never have been enlisted in the first place!

    I have to agree with Matt Black. President Trump had no business posting an opinion regarding an ongoing investigation/trial. As he is Commander In Chief his opinions carry a disproportionate weight and should remain unspoken until after the final determination is made.

    He did the same thing with the Manhattan truck terrorist, calling for him to be sent to Guantanamo and then calling for the death penalty.

    I did not know that he was mentally ill, but that still would not excuse the truth he deserted his post in wartime situation, and as such , he should have been sentenced to if not prison time, than equivalent time in a mental hospital.

    He should have been found guilty of desertion of his post in wartime, and sentenced to time in mental hospital to help him out than, just as we have done with those declared guilty but insane.
