www.giveawayoftheday.com
Each day, this site offers a piece of commercial software free. You download; they provide the registration key.
Granted, not every piece of software is something you might want; and installing 365 programs a year is kind of taxing on your system...but hey, it's free! -
Re: givawayoftheday.com
I have used this site a time or two lately, with results just as advertised. There are usually several reviews of a particular software, so you can have a better idea what it is that is being offered.
The site also makes this claim:
"Giveaway of the day is adware/spyware-free. If you want to check that yourself and keep your system healthy, we recommend Advanced SystemCare package. Pro and Free versions are available."
I downloaded the Advanced SystemCare, it is pretty good, & easy to use. -
Is AVG still a free anti-virus program? My Norton has expired and really don't care about renewing it if there's something free out there.
-
Yes, AVG is still free. However, Microsoft will be firing up the beta of their new AV in the next week or so. Those I know who are using it are very imperssed with it. It will be free.
-
Thanks, Trotter .....I may just wait on that one then

A little info for you:
http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=3120
That article includes the date and web page where the beta will be on the 23rd. I plan on trying to get in on it myself. -
The emails I recieved from AVG was that they were discontinuing their free program, and when I checked ut their site is was now a paid program, so I deleted mine(it wasn't going to update anymore so why keep an outdated program) and I was using 2 antivirus, the other I pay for.
So whats up with ti now, do they have a free program also now, becasue they didn't in May when I got their emails. -
Go here: http://free.avg.com/ -
Their email said there would be no more free updates, if you wanted to continue with the updates you'd have to pay.

My free AVG still updates every day. Maybe they were talking about an earlier version - that you needed to use the latest version for updates.
Then again... I've never gotten an e-mail from them either. -
Mine did stop updating, I had it another week or so and realized it was no longer updating, so I deleted it. I wa sonly going gy what AVG told me, they were no longer going gove fre eupdates, and if you wanted any future updates you'd have to buy the program.

Microsoft Security Essentials is now up and live. They are currently offering the beta. It is free and it will remain free once it moves out of beta.
-
what is that trotter?
I noticed yesterday my sons computer has AVG, about thiem so far they haven't been using an anti virus. -
Microsoft Security Essentials is Microsoft's forthcoming anti-virus. It is based off of Live OneCare, but without the bloat. The beta opened up for a couple of days but is closed now. I am currently using it.
I will post info on it as it goes. Once MS finalizes it, it will be released to the public. MSE is supposed to remain free.
Lots of free AV hre:
